Changing speakers in stock system.

Hi, I've got a 2001 Impala LS, and would like to start making upgrades to the sound system in it. It's got 6x9's in the rear deck, and 6.5's in the front doors. The 6x9s are blown. They sound like ass, and the tweeters don't work anymore either. I was looking at the Kicker KS6930s for the rear deck, but was concerned with if the stock head unit will power them enough to move them. I need speakers that will produce enough bass for the time being; being that I don't have money to get an aftermarket head unit, or amplifiers for a sub woofer. It has an amplifier mounted on the top of the trunk area, and that powers the speakers; that came stock. For the fronts, I was looking at Kicker 07DS600s.

Let me know what you think, and any responses are appreciated.

Yeah it should but go with dd front and back I put them in mine and they sound really good

I assume the rears and tweets are blown because they were clipped by the stock head unit. Replacing the speakers with aftermarket ones will sound better, but you can still kill them easily by overdriving them with dirty signal.

I don't know if it's that. They're almost 10 years old, and it only sounds bad the louder you turn it up. When you turn it a little more than 3/4 way up, you start to hear a cracking noise from the rear left, and a faint crack from the rear right one.

I'm really just wondering if those speakers will be given enough watts to be pushed enough. Right now they're moving at about 1/2in to 3/4in.

I'd recommend leaving the rear doors empty. All rear fill will accomplish is pulling your soundstage rearward. Contrary to popular belief, adding rear fill doesn't really make your mids and highs louder, especially when you're in the front seats.

Try this. While sitting in your car, turn the fader knob where the sound is all in the front of the car. Doesn't really get louder does it? But now it sounds almost as if the sound is coming from in front of you. Like it does at a concert.

But its your money. Do what makes you happy.

Aah. Sorry. I missed the actual question.

That factory amplifier should be enough to power those speakers to a decent level. You'll get a cleaner and louder sound by getting a good aftermarket amplifier, but you don't necessarily NEED an aftermarket amp to push aftermarket speakers.

Awesome. I was just reading on a forum, where someone said that bypassing the amplifier in the trunk would make the rear speakers sound much louder, possibly blowing the stock speakers..

Here is what he said.

The sound the amplifier produced left a lot to be desired on the low frequencies. After bypassing the amplifier, the stock head unit put out speaker level sound rather than low level. It turns out that there is a wire running from the amp to the radio telling the radio that an amp is present. With control over the sound being controlled by the radio, the bass was a lot louder. If you have stock speakers then you would probably blow them."

Would this in turn make the aftermarket speakers sound better? I sure hope so.

There are a lot of rumors going around about there being faulty amplifiers in some Impalas.
