BboyTaktix Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 hey guys, I'm currently running two JBL 1214D's on a clarion DPX11551 (1550RMS at 2ohm). I would like to upgrade to two JBL W12GTI MK2's in a month or two if I can come up with some cash. I can wire them in parallel at 1.5 ohms, but the amp is 2 or 4 ohm stable and not 1 ohm stable. it would be for daily use. I don't want to shell out the cash for another amp if I don't have to. I don't think running them in series/parallel at a 6 ohm load will give enough power with this amp. If it isn't a good idea to run them at 1.5 ohms, I will wait longer and buy another DPX11551 and stack them, running each sub at 3 ohms. Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. And what exactly is box rise? skittlesRgood Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 pressure in the box will raise the impedance when the subs are playing. the 1.5ohms you are measuring is dc resistance. impedance is ac "resistance". your amp puts out ac current so its more relevant. 2x-3x rise is very common so you could easily be seeing 4ohms so there is no real way to say how much power you will get. unless you buy an AC clamp meter and a DMM and measure it yourself. lower ohm loads will cause the amp to work harder, pushing more current. current = heat, and heat is very bad for electronics. i would recommend putting the amp in an amp rack with fans to cool it down. they dont have to be very powerful fans. just a little air across the heat sink will do a lot. I love this amp so far, my concern is if it will last long at 1.5 ohms ( i think it should) or if I should just invest in a second one of the same model, and have each of the JBL GTI's on each amp set at 3ohms.
