MDF question

Hey I was wondering if this was normal? I got a sheet of MDF and was a little confused. Ive been using 48 inches and 96 inches in all my calculations for the box im gonna build. But today I went out to the garage and held a 48" strait edge to the wood and it was too short.

Turns out my MDF sheet is 49"x97"

Is this typical? I'm guessing its so you can make cuts and still have wood to work with rather than losing wood with every extra pass of the saw blade. That way you can make as many blade passes up to an inch.

Most sheets come with a little extra my guess is so you get a true 4 x 8 peice

cool man thanks for lettin me know, i was starting to think i had shrunk or all my tools were messed up

but the measurements have been confirmed by 2 rolls of measuring tape, a strait edge and other objects of standard size

I am actually psyched about my extra inch of wood, it adds an extra square foot of wood

should give me more volume when i build my box =)

A saw blade takes off like a 1/16 of an inch with every cut so remember to add that into account

yeah its cool, I am cutting it basically across, so i will be gaining an inch on the width, but I am going to be making the cuts and losing that 97th inch. however, my box should be 49 wide =)

in my box building program it will be adding a 1/10th of a cubic foot... I'll take that
