byers319 Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 So I was looking at getting a HO alt and was talking to a buddy whose a mechanic. He said that there's a resister (can't remember exactly what he said) connected to the alt somewhere. The bigger alt would burn up the resister then blow the car computer chip. Is there something I'm missing with all of you guys putting in HO alts? Help?

Has this mechanic actually installed a high output alt and seen this happen first hand? 200a alt. by Excessive Amperage hc800 under hood & 2 Deka 9a31 in rear 1/0awg + big 3 SAZ 3000D HDC3 18" @ 2 ohm
EclipseChris Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 What kind of car? Unless its like a honda prototype car or something redic then this is just not true. There is no reason to put a resistor on anything related to the alternator. Alts only put out current as it is needed so the battery can't overcharge (unless the voltage is above 14.7-8 ). I think you'll be fine. He may have confused the regulator with resistor, even then you won't burn it up. i resolve to be a nicer moderator. Tercel build R.I.P.
