I paid damn near 70 just in wood...lol What kind did you use? the guy is going to get 3/4 MDF...how much does that cost? Yeah I spent about $60 on materials for mine and had my friend build it to spec. You also have to realize just cutting the wood and putting it all together could deff take up a whole saturday and to do it good you would need a table saw(lowes cut all my pieces for free!). $100 is good if he will do a quality box built to your specs. By the way, whoever said box size doesnt matter is a moron, you dont have to be an audio engineer to know how sound works!
