i dont like how it sounds :(

Recommended Posts

so i just got my first setup finished. 4 l7s 12's 4 ohm on a saz 3500. i had wired it to two ohms but theres was hardly any excursion so i rewired everything to .5 ohms. i built the box myself, outer dimensions are 38 x 21.5 x 31, .75 mdf, one piece of bracing used from leftover mdf 20 x 3 x .75. port area is a 3.65 x 36.5, length is 17 inches leaving around 3.6" or so from the bottom of the port to the bottom of the box. should be tuned to around 37 something. this is in a 2002 4runner. my electrical is fine, doesnt even drop under 14.4 full tilt (dc 270xp and 2 xs power d3100s 3/0 power ground 1/0 to amp). its loud but it just doesnt have the shaking/pounding i was hoping for. is there any way i can fix this without building a new box? the subs are brand new and supposedly after they break in theyll play lower/louder. one thing i was thinking of was adding to the port length internally but im not sure how much the loss of volume would hurt the subs or if i could offset this by giving it a bit more power. used a 50 hertz test tone 0 decibal to set gain. couldnt find a negative decibel so i turned the gain up a little tiny bit after.

as you can see i dont really have the option of trying to reposition the box.

thanks everyone!

i had a box tuned to 37 and the lows sounded like complete ass. I'd rebuild if I were you and tune it to 31. You will absolutley fall in love with it.

Box and port area is WAY to small. That is why they didn't want to move on you and they are new. L7s need a large box to get boomie, that box is perfect for 2 of those 12's not 4!!!!

u can change the tuning a lil bit by inverting ur subs, it worked in the ported box i built for my 15's, its tuned to around 37-38htz but takeing the motor displacement out of the equation it changes the tuning of the box

now my box went from playing real high notes real loud, to player lower notes and moving more air, its as simple as turning the subs upside down

but if u do decide to try this u need to feel around the back side of the sub by pressing on the surround from the back to make sure its not rubbing on the sub cut out or u might damage the subs surround

u can try this and see how it sounds, most people dont like doing this but it helps if u want a smaller box or lil more sq out of a sealed box, i put my 2 10'' soundstreams in a 2cf sealed devided box inverted and it played lows better than my 15's did and louder also

give that a try n see how u like it

i have a mac and couldnt find any programs to calculate. the 12volt and reaudio ones both give me 32-33 so both those seem to be inaccurate. how much port length would i have to add to get it down to 31-32? kicker specs say 3.25 max, or should i just ignore that? crap on the port/size. i had pat from idyllic enclosures and kicker look at the specs before i built it. so basically i need a box thats a hell of a lot bigger w/ alot more port area or im not gonna get what i want out of it?

i actually thought about doing that before but i wanna stay with regular mounting. thanks for the thought!

That isn't going to help any.

So you're telling me tuning the box lower won't help play the lows louder and deeper? From personal experience, a box tuned at 31hz playing in the 28-33 region is going to sound a hell of a lot better than a box tuned to 37.

Yeah L7's like big box with lots of port to get loud. And they are weird little subs for just about any kind of modeling program out there, and kicker seems to be always out in left field when you ask them for help on building a box for them.
