Strange Voltage Problem

Recommended Posts

I have a strange voltage problem. When I pull up at a stop light playing music with about 1/4 volume my voltage sometimes reads about 11.9 volts at my 4 channel amp. When I hit the highway it goes up to about 13.5 volts, which I would expect, but what I don't understand is when I put my car in park and let it idle the voltage goes up to 13.5 and I can go full tilt and it only drops to about 13.4. I don't really understand how idling at a stop light is different than idling with my car in park. Hopefully someone can help me understand why this is happening. By the way my equipment is listed in my signature.

Thanks,

Jake

the only thing i can think of is that if you have an automatic the load on the engine will make it rev a few hundred rpm lower if it is in gear than if it is out of gear, that extra little bit may be enough to keep your voltage up while in park

What's your voltage with your car off no volume. Also what's your voltage in park, drive and neutral?

This I am not completely sure of since my voltmeter only comes on when the head unit turns on. Also currently I can't access a DMM to test it.

Aftermarket alternator?

No, stock alt. Saving up for aftermarket one.

i am going to go out on a limb here and say something is malfunctioning inside your alternator. my stock alt worked fine until one day, not sure what happened, it was just different. i popped the hood to find smoke rising, thought my alt was shot. at idle it would sit 12, sometimes dropping down to 11.9 if i had anything running (stereo, lights, heater, etc). but when driving around it would sit 13.6 or even 13.9 sometimes. i would look into getting a new alt before anything gets ruined, because it sounds like it isnt working properly
