AMI CUSTOMS Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 Okay so here is my question, those who have built high output spl enclosures, have you sanded the inside of your enclosure and gained? Have you done anything at least to the inside and gained? Like bondoglass, fiberglass, paint, resin, panels....etc. And follow up questions has anyone sprayed the inside of an enclosure down with second skin, sanded that smooth and then painted over that? Looking at the benefit vs time here is my main concern. Cuz if it is going to take me 2 weeks to smooth the inside of my 22 cube wall out and only gain me .2 to .3 then it isn't worth it to me. Okay discuss!!!! Colin - STAPUFT Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 If you get half a db, I bet you would be doing good... I was going to do this with my design and then like you- I weighed time, cost, etc... and said forget it. The only way I could see it making a "big" difference is if this were in an Outlaw vehicle and the box itself had real good flow already- as in full on Kerf work and NO right angles. my .02 12 - 12"s in the STAY PUFT 1989 Chevy Astro Build & Comment Log Un-Interrupted Build LogYouTube Channel Chevy Trailblazer 5.1 Dolby Digital DTS Install You have a beard of a mysterious sea captain. fecupe2001 Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 I´m gonna do a whole review step by step next year with my new termlab on what to do and how much you gain with each thing, in the meantime, i can say to you "trial and error" , why?? you don´t get same results than other peoples even having same box size and subs, first time i sanded the interior i got 0.4 dbs , next time i gained 0.1 dbs wich really sucked ass cause of the work it took, but hell, a gain is a gain. Anyways, YES, resin and sanding inside the box helps you, i´ve gained almost a full db wih 45´s in the past and also, gained only 0.2 dbs last box i made haha, about the dynamat inside the box, i´ve always had that question too, if someone has tried that please jump in and let us know. Just a crazy and dumb idea, instead of resining and sanding the interior, what about using vinyl for printing??? they are VERY smooth, wouldn´t that work? it would be way easier and cheaper, something like this: I´m the SPL Gains topic creator!! wanna get louder?? check this: SPL Gains. AMI CUSTOMS Posted November 10, 2010 Author Report Posted November 10, 2010 I have thought about using lexan or hardboard paneling, hardboard is the stuff they make peg boards out of, one side is super slick, you can actually slide on it. I am thinking of doing second skin sprayed on the whole interior and then hardboard or lexan over, money isn't really a concern if it gained be over a 1 db, it would be worth it to me. fecupe2001 Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 yeah i know, i´m on the same boat, i´ve built burp boxes and had very good numbers in the past, but only using borrowed sensors, i bought a termlab and now i´m gonna try EVERYTHING more confortable, i´m gonna build a box for a single 12" sub and start trying every idea that comes to my mind, one of the it´s dynamat on the interior, in the meantime, well, you have to wait for someone that has tried that to jump in, i can give an opinion with resin and sanding because i´ve done it a lot of times I´m the SPL Gains topic creator!! wanna get louder?? check this: SPL Gains. fecupe2001 Posted November 10, 2010 Report Posted November 10, 2010 I saw all those pics hehe, i do think you would gain a lot by resining and sanding tho, biggest problem it´s the hard work, i always use 1 gallon of resin per 2 cubic feet on burp boxes, for daily boxes i get a " 3:1 ratio" hehe, but damn, getting 7 gallons of resin and sanding that shit would be a real pain in the ass, specially if you see a gain of 0.2 tenths haha, it would suck. That is my point, I could double up on power and gain 3 db!!! And it would be less effort and way less time and get me the same goal.
