New High Output Alternator Not Putting Out Proper Volts - Concern?

Recommended Posts

thats respect bro, too many people have an issue and come on to the forums with their guns blazing.......and dont give the manufacturer or dealer time to resolve it first.

Thanks Steve. They suggested "Missing Link Audio" module per their reply:

The alternator output on your Ford truck is PCM controlled, meaning the computer in the truck commands voltage output of the alternator. Ford does this to increase gas mileage and/or engine performance by constantly changing the charge duty cycle of the alternator. There are devices like the MLA VCM here: http://www.minitruckinweb.com/tech/electrical/0904mt_missing_link_audio_voltage_control_module/index.html that can mess with the duty cycle if a .5v is ruining your day. I’ve never used one of these but the theory makes sense.

...so it looks like I'll be contacting them.

This sorta happened with my alt.. It was fixed by putting a smaller pulley on the alt so alt rpm went up.

What about the grounding??? i had a problem with my new mechman, it didn´t charge past 13.4v and it was behaving all like crap, first i thought, damn, now paying a shipping from latin america to the US, but then i said, EVERYONE is using them with great success, maybe i´m the one doing something wrong, checked all the conections and found out that i didn´t secured the ground wire properly (what a moron) ahaha, anyways, 14.5v all day long without dropping below 14v :yahoo:

I don't have a per-say ground wire from my alternator just the basic ford plug however I did ground the battery to chassis, chassis to frame, frame to engine block and the alternator has another line with 250 inline fuse. All wire is 1/0 (also called big 4). I've checked all the connections and even swapped out the battery terminal connections with new ones now if I take the high output alternator out and put my OEM back in it sits idle and during driving conditions at 14.2-14.4 just fine of course that doesn't last long till I turn the tunes up which is why I decided to get a new alternator.

as suggested earlier bro, maybe you might wanna try to bring your batteries up to full charge with a charger and see if that helps...if your batt is low, even if it dont seem like it is, it can be devastating to your alternator. Is it getting hotter then normal?

Battery was fully charged so that wasn't the issue. These 2 videos were taken within 10 minutes apart which is how long it takes to swap alternators out.

Their alternator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ydq67n7RPg

My Stock Alternator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td9U-PyWB64

Tell me something isn't wrong with their alternator. Anyways they want to charge me a 20% restocking fee and additional $50 for the powder coating. When I first placed the order I sent them an email and offered a video review with comparison between ford stock alternator because I'm apart of a few F150 forums and they agreed to provide is for free. Now he wants to deduct $50 + 20% restocking.

The fight begins.

I was given a full refund and this is what they said:

I received your return and immediately put it on the tester. Low output indeed. Disassembled the unit and the battery post as somehow smashed into the regulator cracking the sealed unit in half. I have no idea how it was charging at all. Like I stated, this alternator was 100% when it was sent to you so I couldn’t understand how you were experiencing low output unless it was damaged in shipping or damaged during install. It’s obvious the alternator was dropped directly on the battery post probably by the UPS man. All you had to do was send it back and you would be on your way.

Your refund has been processed, good luck to whomever you deal with.

Of course this was after I was told the voltage was fine, buy a smaller belt, and maybe purchase a MLA. :trippy:

BTW now that I have received my refund I can tell you the alternator was from powerbastards.com

I have just purchased a 270amp alternator from mechman :yahoo:
