i have my ps3 the same way as i think you have your xbox shkibbybop hdmi straight to tv and the sound thru the fiber optic to the receiver. never had a problem. but if you dont have the receiver on, the sound also come thru the tv. might be different since its a ps3 but like robert says, check for the setting on the main menu sreen to change it at least on the ps3 it does have that option not sure of 360 but prob is the same way.

Yeah, with my U-verse (also hooked up HDMI to TV, then TV fiber to receiver, I get sound from TV and receiver. But when the XBOX sound cuts out, I get no sound through either. Sometimes, the sound works just fine, then other times nada.

Optics from xbox to receiver, that's how I got mine

I wish I could do that, but with no HDMI and only one fiber input on my receiver, I can't.

isn't fiber optic as good as hdmi if not better? i mean its zeros and ones being transfered by light. damn near as pure as it coming of the media drive. Generally speaking dedicated stuff is better than all-in-one ie actual digital camera takes better pics than smartphone, pc faster, more powerful than smartphone ect. but on topic, ish cutting out normally is a connection issue so once again try a diffent hdmi cable? does your reciever hade a coaxial digital audio input? newegg.com has a coaxial to optical converter that would allow you to run one optical to the coaxial input for 20bucks. call me cheap but i wouldnt replace my reciever just because it lacks hdmi when there are other much cheaper ways to get full digital sound into a reciever other than hdmi
