Coolwazabi Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 Hey got a 94 Cadillac Deville with nearly 100k. The car was having some issues about a month ago. The car would idle odd and jump around. Took it to a mechanic and he said the idle speed control sensor is no longer working. Replaced it.Also was having a leaky water pump gasket and radiator. Had the idle control sensor, the water pump plus gasket and the radiator. Now it runs a little better, but seems to idle a little too low, car has very little power, is extra loud and gets crappy gas mileage. Mechanic said it could either be the catalytic converter or the throttle body being dirty, but no leaky exhaust pipe "maybe thought it was loud because of that". Cleaned the throttle body real good, helped a little but still has the same issues. I was told the catalytic converter would smell like poo if it was too clogged. I could adjust the idle control sensor a little to make it idle a little more, but not sure if its gonna do any good. But has anyone had similar issues and maybe a quick fix or just a reliable fix ?? There should be a screw on the throttle body to adjust the idle of your car. Mosin Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Have a mechanic check the cat for you. Or you can do it yourself. Do the 'Drill Test' to check for clogged cat:DRILL TEST – CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER The PCM does a very good job of monitoring the efficiency of the cat; that is, whether it is effectively cleaning pollutants from the exhaust stream. But a cat can become partially-clogged in several ways, including exhaust deposits and collapse of the honeycomb structure; it is still able to pass exhaust gases, and may even be ‘efficient’ at cleaning them. But the clog creates excessive backpressure that adversely affects the engine performance. This is primarily noticeable as lack of power at higher rpms (3500+) and acceleration, and as a rough idle that may even cause stalling; at mid-range (1000-3500) the backpressure is still present, but not noticeable since the strong engine kind of ‘powers through’ the clog. TEST: A mechanic has a special $200 tool that he will screw into the front O2S port, to measure the actual speed of exhaust gases past that point; very definitive test. Midas or other muffler shop will take a torch and burn a 3/8” hole in the side of the exhaust pipe, about 4 inches (100mm) ahead of the cat, toward the engine. This is enough to relieve the pressure AT IDLE and allow the crappy idle to smooth out noticeably. The DIYer can do the same thing by drilling 3/16” (4mm) hole at the same location; larger would be better, but 3/16” (#14) is the largest commonly-available sheet metal screw for sealing the hole. With the engine idling, alternately open and close the hole using an oven mitt. * If the idle improves with the hole ‘open’, then the cat is clogged and needs replacement. * If there’s no difference between ‘open’ and ‘closed’, clogging is not the issue; seal the hole with the screw (Midas would burn the hole shut with a torch).
