Impedance rise vs wire thickness

Recommended Posts

It's more than tuning. Pretty much every aspect of the box has some sort of effect on it. ft^3 of the box, port size, port length, tuning, how far the sub is from the port, etc etc etc. The only way we really know how to do anything about it right now is to build one box, clamp it and figure out your rise. Then build a few more boxes and clamp it to figure out the rise of those. Basically rebuild and rebuild and rebuild until you find what works best for you. And the box with the least rise may not end up with the highest TL score or sound the best, but it will be recieving the most power.

And that is kind of what I do, I use the imp rise to my advantage so I can get the most out of my amp on burp, which in turn with the proper freq and volume will yield the highest score.

It just sucks that even if you change one aspect of the same box, it's going to change multiple aspects at the same time lmao. Like for your wall, if you were to lay down 1 layer of bricks on the inside you would reduce the air space, raise the tuning, and increase the in^2/ft^3 all at the same time.

And raise the rise at the same time. But I could reduce rise by just sanding the whole inside and resin it. LOL

So you've found out the normally decreasing box space and raising tuning will also raise box rise? Interesting. I have a friend that was wiring his Stetsom 10k @ .5 ohms and rising to 2 ohms (4:1) and then wiring it at 2 ohms and rising to 4 ohms (2:1), one of the local guru's was saying how normally the lower you wire to begin with the lower riser you'll see and this setup deviated from what he normally saw.

See this is where I think the mech properties of the driver come into play, cuz in my setup, wired at 2, I rise to 6.5 (3.25:1) and wired at .5, rise to 1.4 (2.8:1), now if I put different 15's in my wall, like dc lvl 4 xl's dual 1's, will my rise be the same? That is what gets my mind going on this subject. Just change the woofer and see what happens. And assume the woofer has the same displacement so the box volume doesn't change obviously.

Yea I was going to say the drivers will probably have different displacements, may not make too much of a difference but it will make some. I've only clamped my SMD wired at 1 (well .7 I guess) and I'm at 3.3 after rise, so that's about 4.7:1 unless you are just supposed to consider it 1 ohm then it would be 3.3:1. Don't feel like trying to wire it at 4 ohms and clamping the amp, I'm not that worried about rise lmao. Was just interesting to see the actual power I was getting out of my SAZ 4500.

No, that won't work, you don't want to ever wire just one coil on a dvc sub.
