GymJunkie
Im thinking electrical surge fried the psu but need your ideas. First you might need to know that its older, ddr1, ide cables instead of sata. Anyway, i plug it in and the light on the psu flashes and u can hear it click, thats all that happens. So....? Rebel4055
Take the PC apart and setup a bench setup as in, place the motherboard on a cardboard box etc etc. Could be that the PSU went but if the PSU went it 98% of the time takes something else with it. If you have another one you can try that. And doing the outside of the case setup can see if it's a short. Edited January 18, 2011 by Rebel4055 Quote Rest In Peace mother. SR20DAZE
im not computer guru but i hope psu means power supply unit, it happened to me too a while back idk what i did to dry it on accident i think it was a short to but my computer had the same simptoms it would light up but as soon as i hit the power button it would cut out and die instantly, i had a spare power supply and swapped it out and it worked. i hope that helps a bit Quote Hahah damn cody She ain't that sexy. GymJunkie
If its a short, how would setting it up outside of the case help? It flashes immediately after plugging it in whether I press power or not, pressing power does nothing different. And unfortunately I dont have another PSU to try with. Side question, I want to hook up his HDD to an external case so I can get his stuff off for him, would I have to worry about his OS trying to load and would I have to worry about it causing any kind of damage if his HDD is fried too? This all went down during the huge electrical storms we were having Quote 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. Rebel4055
if the motherboard had a short in it putting it outside on a piece of cardboard would see if its a short, now that you said you have been having electrical storms that PSU probably took a shit. And just plug that HDD in to another PC and just grab the info. Make sure in your bios when you do have it installed to make sure it doesn't use that HDD as a boot drive. Lets hope that PSU didn't take the HDD or something else with it. Edited January 18, 2011 by Rebel4055 Quote Rest In Peace mother. SR20DAZE
i think if you move the pins in the back you can set it to slave drive, but im not sure lol Quote Hahah damn cody She ain't that sexy. GymJunkie
According to the chart of his 30gig HDD, it is currently set to "DS (Slave) or Spare". Hopefully this doesnt do anything to my comp, dont have nearly enough experience with this Quote 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. Rebel4055
When swapping hardware around always touch the inside of the case where you see bare metal so you make sure you have no static electricity build up. Autruche
Turn your computer off, take your PSU out and hook it up to his computer. If his computer turns on, you know it was the PSU. Also, do vice versa, hook his PSU up to your computer and see if it turns it on. Depending on whether the main plug is 20 or 24 pin you may or may not be able to do it. We don't need to make this complicated by switching out drives and crap guys... Quote Need Test Tones/Sine Waves?
