How can you reduce door flex?

Recommended Posts

I just recently installed a new system and my doors are flexing like crazy. I have a 99 tahoe and the rear barn doors flex too much, not worried about the flex itself as much just the noise the doors make as there about to jump off the hinge. im just curious if anyone has did anything to reduce this besides sound deadener.

Only way to really "reduce" flex is by adding some form a mat to stiffen the metal. There are ways of "absorbing" the vibrations and reducing noise. And that would be to simply wedge soft objects such as a blanket or some form of foam inbetween the vibrating parts. Problem with putting blankets in your doors, is that it will eventually absorb moisture, and now you have wet blankets in your door which will start to getting moldy and nasty, on top of possibly promoting rust.

Generally, the door cards themselves as well as the window slider mechanics are what cause the most amount of "noise". Other than actually matting down everything on the backside of the door card. You really dont have much options besides deadener, or the spectrum sludge that Second skin offer.

99 Tahoe rear barn doors…replace hinge pins and bushings, replace or at least properly adjust all the latches, and replace the rubber seal on the truck side. That should help a ton. Mine are shot and so are most others that I see. Grab the top edge of the door and pull back to test--just about guarantee there's some movement there if those parts have never been replaced.

Also add sound deadener.

Static drops are my bag.

Thats pretty much whats making the noise, not door internals , but the barn doors themselves at the top, like there jumping off the latch and slapping togeather, hinges dont seem loose but ill check that and the weather stripping, its a bummer really, feel like i cant enjoy my new system like i should be.. i appreciate the help guys, ill let you know what i find out

weather stripping! my doors flap open like a retired porn star running into the wind! i got some nice thick weather stripping, put it around the door and car. worked like a charm!

now they don't flap open, make noise... nothing!

actually gained a Lil because now air isn't escaping threw the doors.

did the same thing for my trunk.

the harder your doors are to shut the better it works.

for a month i had this terrible rattle coming from the back of my car. i thought it was the internals of my rear doors. until one day i had my Buddy upfront, Lil bro in the back and his friend back there. I'm a few seconds into the demo/drive and

i hear my Lil bro go "holy shit!" i turn down the beats to hear him. he tells Me he can see daylight coming threw my door. turn back up and then realized it was both doors. they were opening allot!

cost like $12 bucks in weather stripping to fix it.

Where do you put the weather stripping? I would like to secure up my hatch a bit, but it already has a bit seal all the way around. Do you apply on top of the seal, or around the outside/inside of it?

i put it all the way around the outside of the door where the doors stock weather stripping touches the car.then i applied more to the car where the new weather stripping from the door would touch.

be sure not to leave a gap! water will seep in if you don't have a good seal.
