And his pops, with the clean as hell Light Blue Z32 I did the bose pod upgrade on... along with the guy with the Black Z32 coupe I did an install in a while back... http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/ind...?showtopic=3460 All asked me to make some copies of these fiberglassed air ducts that replace the fog lights in the bumpers these cars. The ducts are aimed at the brake/caliper setup so they are actually FUNCTIONAL too and provide extra air cooling for the brakes. So I did a lil research and ended up pickin up the supplies. This is technically a "gel-coat" method using silicone mould maker to create a mould of an already existing, "finished" (smooth and "shiny") part, out of fiberglass. So heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere we go! Materials: TAP plastics...=awsome. Here's one of the originals..they're CF overlay but the weave is pretty messy/jacked up lookin. So the goal here is copy em and either color match them to the car's exterior, paint em black, or RE-CF overlay em but NOT as gay as these are. LSN2meBoom916 Posted April 7, 2008 Author Report Share Posted April 7, 2008 The edges are a lil "bowed" towards the rear...it won't matter as long as the front edge sits flush and the gap is not visible, but one option we have is to alter this and make em flat edged instead of inward-curved. See the curve at the bottom/light pokin through...? and sittin straight....might not be a big deal as long as they mount totally straight. Next I thoroughly sprayed the shyte outta them with the NON STICK mould release agent, so I can get these apart easily after I silcone/glass/resin em. 1 part hardener to 9 parts silicone. Crappy Handwriting...bite me. First coat of silicone....pretty thin but nice n smoooooth. Drippy drip Dried.....MDF floatin.... Smooooooooooove Makin a "catch cup" mould to minimize the drippage and form the outer edge of the mould. LSN2meBoom916 Posted April 7, 2008 Author Report Share Posted April 7, 2008 Mind you this is TRIMMED quite a bit to remove the nonessentials and make the mould more streamlined...for no reason other than for it not to be ugly as hell. So this is kinda important.... As thin as the mould is/was in some areas, I wanted to make sure as hell it wouldn't break/tear/shift and mess up my final part, since that would kinda negate all the previous work so I flipped this bish over BEFORE I pulled the OG part OUT of the mould and layed a nice 2nd mould of Fiberglass to give the MOULD some strength...the mould by itself is QUITE floppy and flexible at this point so I wanted a solid platform on the back side of the mould so it couldn't distort the shape of my final pulled glass part. I started with woven matt.....cuz I had it handy/extra. Chopped mat would work fine too but ya GOTTTA pull it apart (a-la GP2K2) otherwise it aint likely gonna make a very sharp turn/curve as is required in this here mould. Paint on Resin...then woven mat... Then more resin+more woven mat...starting in the center and working outward to minimize air bubbles/pockets... Then striaght up chopped mat for strength... Glass reinforcement "plate" by it's lonely..pretty damn smooth itself. Not sure about this pic but it's uploaded so eat up. Gettin ready to lay the glass in the mould. Spray it down NICE with mould release first the finished part pops out easily. First paint it down with resin...get in all the corners/cracks and whatnots...not too many here but u feel me.... Bring on the PULLED chop mat. =STRONG AS HELL, and TAKES ANY IRREGULAR SHAPE NO PROBLEM.
