steve's is smaller than spec because he is running over double the RMS to them you are WAY underpowering yours, and should make as big a box as possible, since you have to decide besides building an ideal sealed box and a bad ported one, just do the one you can do well and make it look good.

go sealed, its too small it was already said, you didnt read it 9 would be a minimum, plus port, 15ish is better if you have maybe 8, just build a spec sealed box, ported wont fit

either seal it off and port/subs forward, or just turn them around so they can load off the trunk the air is getting swished around, so not only are you losing pressure because the air in the back of the trunk is being compressed and moved, but the pressure waves also come back and cause cancelation and junk break out the sprayfoam

to answer the questions, yes there are distinct smells a subwoofer gives off a smell of the glue/varnish burning off during break in and the eerily similar, but much more harmful, burning copper smell, common to all electronics (i've smelled it on everything from amps to hu's to unfused power lines that shorted) as long as your subs arent being clipped too badly or overpowered (which they arent on that amp afaik) you should be fine, and it's probably just the smell of the varnish, and should go away after like 10-20 hours of beating on them

you CAN do manuals (neutral safety switch is highly reccomended, but not essential, it will work without it but you run the risk of it starting in gear which is veryeryvery bad) you CAN do a car with no power locks (either disarm and unlock with key, or use aftermarket actuators) carburetor is not something you'd want to mess with...chokes, pumping gas, unpredictable crank times...its all possible but not really something you'd want to mess with (a lot of people put crate motors with fuel injection into older cars when the motor dies, we've had a few cars come through for remote starts and alarms that were basically resto-rods with a new crate motor and wheels and suspension, but old body and interior, classic style and modern running and reliability)

with 12 cvr's you could run something more in the 6000watt ballpark, 2000ish will barely get em moving with dual 2's you can get a 1.33ohm load, probably best you'll get without going under 1... you could get a .67ohm load if you use dual 4's.... cvr doesnt come in single voice coil afaik i just like did this in my head figuring 3 banks of 4 subs...if you do like 4 banks of 2 subs it should still be the same i think, idk how you plan on wiring this or whatever

quad is kinda useless...its not like it handles heat better or makes the sub work better, its supposed to give you more options as far as impedance hooking it up, but with the d1/d2/d3/d4/d1.4/d8/etc options you can get, a quad is just excessive and its confusing as fuck to hook up
