Why not just measure the parameters yourself when you get the subs? That way, you will know exactly what box to put them in. Depending on the sub, an 18 inch transmission line can be as big as a small closet. You can still fit two of them in an Excursion, tho. Don't hate, guys. Let the man work....

All you need to do is open your port up and recalculate the tuning. You never want to curve your port if you don't absolutely have to. Air is a fluid, like water. Imagine water trying to flow through that port and you will get an idea of what will happen with air. It crashes into corners and created turbulence; which is the enemy of efficiency. With a box that long, you are going to want straighten that port up a lot. You may need 1 bend, if that.

That port is waaay too small to have that many reverse bends in it. Also, all the airspace in that enclosure will overwhelm that port really fast if you put any amount of power on it. With that much space, why not do a t-line or horn?

With all the proper tools, including the reactor(!), your work ought to be the BOMB!! LOL Be safe and have fun! BTW, make sure you post pics....

This definitely qualifies as a "stealth" system in my book because, when it's done, they will never know it contains an audio avalanche. I think we should declare an SMD Day. x2 Two ports for the same port area simply increases the surface friction and temperature inside your port because two ports will have more surface area than only one. This reduces the overall efficiency of your whole subwoofer system with two ports as opposed to one. Boon, I am with you on this. Don't the multiport enclosures sometimes sound like they are wheezing? This, I think, is because of the surface friction inside the ports/

You can make it ultra-complicated if you want to; then your box will never get built. Just read the T-line post and trust the numbers. I have built a lot of enclosures and sometimes I still get butterflies waiting to see if it will sound good. They always sound just like they were supposed to and yours will too if you take your time and do it right. Just do it! Good answer. Also, with two subs, you have two separate voice coils to dissipate heat and two separate motors to create kinetic energy. Sometimes, two smaller motors can be more efficient than one monster slug because of thermal management and mechanical factors (i.e. a huge, stiff suspension to damp 1000s of watts). To make things simple, you should look at your vehicle to determine what would be best for IT. That one monster will definitely outperform two lesser subs if you don't have the space for them, for example.

Four of these would stomp 2 18 inch BTLs for under $1200 assuming you have both the space and the power for them. http://www.lanzar.com/itempage.asp?MODEL=OPTI1533D 3000 watts RMS with dual 1.2 ohm coils. They would be great on 4 AP30001Ds. Or, with 1.2 ohm coils, you can run one large amp at .8 on 3 of them. There is also the Optidrive 1535D that handle 1600 watts RMS with the same basket as the old AAs, 3 inch coil (dual 1.2 also), and triple stacked magnets for about 30% less money.

RMS Power handling and efficiency are the main factors that determine how loud a sub is capable of getting.

How are you on battery and amp space now? That need won't decrease with 18s. Bigger is not always better.

You're right, James. Planet Audio's BB12 and BB15 look very similar to the Lanzar 32 Series. They have the same basket, after all; but the Lanzars are a little more beefy than the BBs. The 1232s handle 1100 watts RMS (easily), whereas the BB15, for example, only handles 750 watts RMS. The Lanzars have a BIG spider, triple stacked magnets, and an aluminum cone on a 3 inch VC. The new 1533s we were discussing also come with a 3 inch coil, but I suspect it's a real slug. I will have to measure the parameters of the 1533s when they arrive, but will post the numbers calculated later.

Ben's 1533Ds will arrive on Thursday. The 1232Ds that I have now were on in the FS section for a while, but they perform so well that I couldn't bear to sell them for lowballers. Sentimental value, if you will. Here they are shown with Kicker L7 12" subs for perspective: We had been waiting for the 33 series to start shipping for a while and they are finally out, so these are the subs to replace the venerable old 1232s. I would put those old 12s subs up against DCs lvl 4 12" any day of the week. I'm not going to say that the 1533s will perform like BTLs or anything because I haven't played with them yet, but I predict it will be very close.
