  1. holy shitt, old school VGA! and that VGA cord you have will work, there is no such thing as 9 pin adapter to 15, i would order up a new VGA cable if you really cared, one with 15 on each end. (just any new cord really, they dont make 9 pin anymore) sounds like hardware failure, POSSIBLY (not accusing you of anything) something is wired wrong if you undid any of the connections. i have a Gigabyte mobo, and one beep = post success then proceed to send signal to the monitor/keyboard/mouse/usb. you need to count the beeps and go find the beep codes on google OR the gigabyte website that will tell you exactly whats wrong. or if your motherboard has them, the LED light codes on the mobo itself, all lights engaged = complete hardware success, proceed to power peripherals. the beeps and the light codes should be in your gigabyte manual, (i believe). as kickass audio said, there is a great chance that one of the caps blew on the mobo causing a short creating the power test to fail. EDIT: serial cable... wow lol.. yes, please do purchase a new VGA cable and try that solution first. serial cable is before my time, is why i didnt notice it, but yes kickass audio is correct again, that is a male serial cable
  2. "i upgraded to windows 7 eventually, which went just fine. i had windows 7 32 bit on it, and decided to change it to windows 64 bit" does the computer even POST at the bios? if no, hardware failure. if it does post and loads windows, but stops displaying, its driver failure. also for future reference, NEVER "upgrade" your os to another, ALWAYS do a clean install. and definitely never go from 32 to 64 bit, or vise versea because everything you installed hardware wise needs to be reinstalled, every single driver and possibly several programs. The 9 pin and 15 pin you are talking about are called VGA and DVI in case you were curious. EDIT: 9 pin? >.> i just counted the pins on a extra VGA cord laying around and there is 15.. and there is only 3 display adapters ive ever heard of (vga, dvi, hdmi) and dvi is like 24 on one side, then 4 on the other that surround a flat bar.. so what is 9 pin? pics please?
