  1. What sort of information would I have to give? I just woke up and was going to go down before work to check and see if it was just 1 or both so I could post that after I check it out in a bit
  2. I'm just wondering, I was listening to Wet Dolphin by Psyph and nothing in that song dips below 35Hz that I saw and my box is tuned to 32Hz. And it's not like I was turning the volume knob ALL the way up, I tuned it by ear I guess you could say and honestly feel like I wasn't clipping on that part either. Is it at all possible that it's a manufacturing defect? (Just wondering, don't tear me a knew ass) Is it at all possible that perhaps when I got these that one of the voice coils had been partially damaged before and still have played since I wasn't giving full rated power? To Nate's post, if something below tuning frequency was played before, could that have damaged something yet still been playable? And over time it just took it's toll and finally broke? Appreciate the help so far guys, always good to learn from your mistakes when there's not much money involved I suppose
  3. Also, my car's resonant frequency seems to be rather high, maybe 52 or 53 Hz (A Milli and Got Money seem to sound really great whereas some of the C&S music I like doesn't "sound as loud" even though my box is tuned low). So when I have my windows up, the low notes sound even quieter as well. Could having my windows too far up have caused my subs to blow? Really just posting anything I can think of at the moment before I head off to bed, thanks again
  4. So I was at work earlier delivering pizzas, and on my way back to the shop I was jamming out to Wet Dolphin by Psyph. All of a sudden one of my 12s shits itself. Haven't checked out whether or not it's both of them, or just one of them considering it's 5:20am at the moment and I just got off work, but what would your guesses be as to why I blew it/them? I've got them hooked up to my RTP251D MTX amplifier that puts out 200 watts at 2 ohms and they're in a 3.8 cu ft net box tuned to 32Hz (Manual said they have fs of 27Hz) Any help would be appreciated, I'm thinking that I will just continue saving up money for what I was planning on doing this summer anyways but that's a few $1000 down the road
  5. Is that 3.7 cu ft after port/sub displacement or a gross volume of 3.7 cu ft?
  6. x2 I've found many new songs that I like just from buying actual CDs at Best Buy or whatever (6s and 7s, K.O.D., etc). Songs I'd never heard of before and that I haven't seen in any bass videos, but they hit and haven't gotten old yet.
  7. Yeah, I think it's just the thrill of actually being able to do it the first time you realize that you can. I'm pretty much over it now until my next upgrade, at which point I'm sure I'll make a video rolling through the campus parking garage just for lulz
  8. I'm saving for 2 FI SP4 18s. I'm probably going to end up paying somebody professional to actually build it for me though considering it'll be a permanent build unlike the ghetto ported box I built for my current 12s. If the 2 18s wall didn't have to be built so perfectly I'd probably end up trying my hand at that too, it's just that I don't have much room to mess up in my Cav =/
  9. That's what my next setup should be like, I'll be walling off 2 FI SP4s on a DC 5.0k in my tiny ass Cavalier and tuning super low
  10. TITS OR GTFO! Voted btw, good luck to her! EDIT: Oh damnit Jaylor, I only just now noticed your avatar
  11. So do you happen to know if the higher or lower notes are easier to do it with? I wasn't actually paying attention to that part and White Girl has a 30Hz note as well as a 50Hz note
  12. Yeah, same thing happened to me earlier. I pulled into the grocery parking lot when I went shopping and noticed that an alarm was going off when I went into the store then somebody shut it off. At first I didn't know if it was me or just the person messing with their alarm tryna scare me when I got out or something. So then when I left I intentionally tried to see if it was me and I ended up setting off two. I think I'm over the thrill of it now though, just another stepping stone along the "loudness scale"!
  13. That's funny, because everytime I've had to park in the parking garage on campus here (full parking lot outside my dorm ftl) I can't recall setting off an alarm. I think I did once, but I didn't actually stop my music to find out. I was thinking of making a bass video for the Decaf'd version of White Girl in the parking garage tomorrow (what set off the 2 alarms I referred to earlier).
  14. So I just went out to the store about a half hour ago and I ended up setting off not one, but TWO car alarms! I'm running 2 Kicker Comp 12s on 200 watts in a ported box and I can't ever remember being able to do this before. Some might think it's a dick move and be all like while others are like , but I think of it more as a ladder of progression to just how loud your vehicle comes to be over time with upgrades (door flex, jelly windshields, hairtricks, etc). I've gotta admit, I laughed pretty hard when it happened earlier because I had no clue it was even possible with the low power I'm running. So anyways, when was the first time YOU set off a car alarm?
  15. Listen to Kranny, maybe try a single 12 between the seats for now on RMS rating. We wouldn't want you to end up blowing all of your hard earned job money on blown equipment now would we? It'd take forever to make it back!
  16. That's because the higher your port area per cubic foot, the peakier it'll sound. The lower your port area per cu ft, the more musical it'll sound. If you're trying to sound really musical however, you've just gotta keep in mind that you don't want to have too low of port area to the point where you're choking the sub. And same goes for the higher side. If you're trying to make it peakier, don't make your port area per cu ft so big that it's basically playing in free air. That's why the average suggested is 12-16 sq in of port area per cu ft of box, 12 being on the musical side and 16 being on the peakier side. There are exceptions to this as with all things though, for example I've heard that DD/AQ subs absolutely love port area. So most people tend to go with 16-18 sq in of port per cu ft for DD/AQ subs from what I've seen. Just some of the stuff that I've seen people come to a consensus over while browsing teh SMD intarwebz
  17. Im still kinda new to this port/airvelocity/volume thing so help me out here. What your saying is that its not the overall port area that counts its the ratio of heights to width? Nono, that's not what I'm saying at all. What I'm trying to say is that both of these matter. Port area per cubic foot can create port noise, but so can too narrow of a port as well. Ok good, so I have a big enough port. Now I just need to get the ratio down to... what. What is a good ratio to be at? I wouldn't say that there's an ideal port ratio (although aeroport would be ideal since it's the most efficient), but the smaller the ratio the better. I'd say probably 1:6 ratio of either width to height or vice-versa would be the max. There's always going to be exceptions, but I'd just try sticking with as small of a ratio you can work with.
  18. Im still kinda new to this port/airvelocity/volume thing so help me out here. What your saying is that its not the overall port area that counts its the ratio of heights to width? 19. The choking noise you hear is port noise, which is what you'll get if your port is too narrow in relation to the height as well.
  20. Think of it along the lines of aeroports vs slotted ports. Aeroports are suggested as 9-13 sq in of port per cu ft of box, whereas slotted ports are 12-16 sq in per cu ft. That's because since the aeroports are round, they're more efficient. As you make the port longer and narrower it's going to become increasingly inefficient, which is where port noise starts happening.
  21. Yeah but 5 in by 10 in port is only a 1:2 ratio. 3x38 is 1:12.66 ratio
  22. 2.5x26.5 port might give you port noise
  23. its the best I can do with the space I have. All I can do is 45 the corners and hope for the best. Then I'd honestly consider getting 15s so that you will be able to fit them in if I were you. Or at least get a few more opinions on this before going ahead with it
