  1. Thanks for the response. Fortunately I've got done now thanks to you guys. Mods, please feel free to lock this thread.
  2. I hope he had earplugs in. I read an article about a guy who got his foot stuck and a train was about to be there. He couldn't free up so he did the best he could by laying down and hoping he was low enough. He wasn't touched but he did lose his hearing.
  3. They are a sweet machine. I'm not saying that they are the fastest cars available by a long shot but they have always given me the best results for the $$ in upgrades. AWD launches really piss the guy you are racing off too.
  4. If it was going to be an audio project, hell yeah, I'm with ya. Since I am going for fast all resources go to making it fast and/or keeping it on the road. Here is some of the most recent progress: Engine bay is a bit cleaner now. Coolant system flushed/cleaned. New antifreeze and water 50/50 mix and 1 bottle redline water wetter now flowing through it. Strangely, the T-stat seems to be ok. This was the first batch that we (a friend of mine named Joe and I) harvested. Nice huh? By the way, Joe really wants a DSM now too! Some of the fluids that have gone in so far, and thats not all of them Pics of Joe (Left) and I with my new money pit. Turbo timer: Factory crap gone and Pioneer single din installed. I will be installing some gauges in area above it, I just don't have them yet. Just a little bit more done. Almost all of the old gas is gone. The only thing keeping it off the road is the lack of legal status (tags and inspection). I will be getting that done soon. More later. Oh, Rusty, thanks. You know, there are some decent 1g dsms around for pretty good prices . It took a bit of looking but I found what I wanted.
  5. Thank you very much. I really figured it would be that simple, but for some reason I couldn't figure out the magic combo. I am glad that you pasted it as well. I tried your link (which I'm pretty sure is the same place that I was trying) and it did the same and wouldn't download for me. Thanks again.
  6. Ok, I know it is a stupid question. I also know that there are many that would tell me to I would, but I bought the unit used (my wife's friend neded money and was selling the belongings of her deadbeat, incarserated husband)and so it didn't come with one. I have searched Pioneer, but I can't seem to download the manuals. They stop downloading about 10% of the way through. I have searched the forums, but I can't find anything. I haven't messed w/ a Pioneer HU in a long time. I am sure that I just have to hold one of the buttons for a few seconds and it will let me set the clock, but I have tried everything that I know to try. Nothing has worked. So, anyone know how to set the clock on a Pioneer CD/MP3 player? Specifically, can anyone tell me how to set the clock on the Pioneer DEH P4600MP? Any help is greatly appreciated. Comments that indicate stupidity, ignorance, etc. are understood.
  7. Well, progress is in short supply these days. I have managed to spend a little bit of time with her today. I was able to accomplish the following: Installed new front o2 sensor Sprayed a lot of Meguiars interior "stank killer" in the interior cleaned some of the grease from the engine bay flushed, cleaned and refilled coolant confirmed that radiator fan does work took a quick drive and made a bit of boost sprayed a lot more Meguiars interior "funk destroyer" Bought radio harness adapter so that I can stick a CD player in it, the stock barely works That is about it. Just a bit of progress here and there. Hopefully tomorrow I will have time to at least get the oil will get changed before I plant myself on the couch to watch the Cowboys.
  8. Very nice. I assume that you have two of the same hobbies that I have. Good Point. Also: If they hate then let them hate. All they are doing is talking shit. I bet that Steve doesn't give a #!@$ about them. I bet he is louder, but louder or not, he is doing his thing. As far as anyone on this board can see he seems to be doing it big and doing it well. I bet Steve is probably not sitting at home worrying about who might think the Lanzar van is better than his Tahoe.
  9. Sounds like things are going well for you. Congrats on one hell of an accomplishment.
  10. I'm not trying to push the martial arts stuff too hard, but I just want to throw out there that at any good school, the only ass whoopin that you should get will be the workout. Good schools would never let potential new students get "beaten" on. They would never get any students. Anyway, I just recommend what I know helped me. We are all a bit different so as long as you have things working for you that is all that matters. Congrats on your success so far and good luck on your continued success.
  11. Glad to hear that you are still going. I know that there are some really tough moments, but you can do it. I don't know what the verdict is on Chantix, first it was the miracle that helped everyone stop smoking, then it causes uncontrollable anger problems and increases risks of suicide, then it is ok, then it sucks, etc. Everyone that I know of that has used Chantix said it worked wonders, and then when the news did the article on how it caused people to be angry and suicidal they said they felt that way from it. I wonder though, is that the drug or the withdrawal? I don't know what to think of it, but I saw Wellbutrin mentioned and I have heard that Chantix works way better. I think that the path that you are on now is a good one. Remember that beef jerky snuff tip. It really helped me. That and some serious workout time. I don't know how athletic you are/ever have been, but if you want to know what I am talking about, find a really competitive Judo or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school and see if you can "roll" with them for a couple of trial lessons. I don't think that Patty and Selma from the Simpsons could think about smoking for at least 2-3 hours after a workout like that. No matter what tips and tricks you do or don't use, good luck. Your choice and commitment to it will pay off more than what it may seem right now.
  12. Wow, I was away from a computer too long. Here we go. No thanks on the motor swap. This is one of my favorite motors ever. I still can't find word to describe it. I think that it is best served with a quote from one of my "mustangs rule the earth" friends when he said, "I can't get over how efficient it is. Its like power on demand." Now that was said about my last DSM, the 2G seen below. Haynes manual, oh man do I know it. That, patience, a lot of money or credit, and a lot of praying. Don't know what the problem is about the backseats. They are easily pulled, but I will be going for as stock as I can get to get it tagged and inspected since it has been off the books for a few years. After that, fun time. Oh, and its a 92 TSI AWD 6 bolt/4 bolt. Yes, definitely a project, but so far it has gone well, I have only confirmed that I need the drivers side switch for the passenger window, and a front o2 sensor. The car that sat for years and still has old as hell gas in the tank, has been running up and down my street all evening as I have been working it over. The full interior is in except for the missing hatch carpet, and the 2 covers for the side mirror bolts (I skipped them last night due to darkness, today I just forgot). The tires seem to be holding air still. So, really it has been a smooth ride so far. I haven't put it up on a lift to figure out what issues I might find when I crawl under her. No Honda motors for me thanks. I do understand jumping on instinct. I still think 4g63 on everything. Fortunately, I have come full circle and I have another one to play with. I will be trying to find a parts car to strip for some extra stuff, but for the most part, I am done with progress until friday. I work all day mon-fri and I have martial arts classes tomorrow, wednesday and thursday. After that though, back to the fun. I will try to keep progress posted.
  13. I have a real issue. I love big bass, but I love building DSMs. Since my hobbies hate each other, it is kind of what you would think life is like as someone with multiple personalities. I mentioned awhile back in a post on here that I would be starting a new project. It has been a little longer than I thought, but I bought the car tonight. No upgrade work yet, just the work to get it together and get it to my house. And now for the pics: There was a bit of work necessary before it headed to its new home. Progress was made. And well, who are we kidding, some replacement parts required: Always nice to buy a car that you have to tow home... Its all good though, it will be a lot of fun. I hope to get the tranny swapped soon, get it running right (it has been sitting for 2-3 yrs), replace the timing belt, change all fluids, etc. Then I will hit the track to get some times in stock format. After that, the fun really begins. More pics and updates as they happen.
  14. No offense meant, but I just don't see using a substitute habit to quit one. When I quit, I used a similar principle, but something not so addictive. I bought a bunch of the beef jerky "snuff". I did that because I could "dip" it like snuff, but no nicotine and not addictive so I would be able to get rid of the nicotine from the smoke and no new addiction formed. I chewed some gum and what not, but to me, gum triggered my mind to think, "I just ate, so I should be smoking now." I also only "dipped" the jerky when I was really wanting to smoke. Now, it was my wife and I so the number is more, but I still put $70 per week into a money market account. We use it for vacations, cars, etc. Also, for me, another very helpful part was martial arts. I had been into martial arts since I was 5, but while in high school I let it go and started getting high and that ended up w/ regular smoking as well. I quit the drugs eventually, then gave up drinking (by seriously 2 weeks before my 21st birthday) and the only thing left was the cigs. I got back into martial arts and started working out again (little bit of strength training, a lot more cardio than anything). Believe me, there is no better way to not want a cigarette than to work really hard. I have since added a few more credentials to my martial arts list, I have saved a lot of $ and I am a lot better off than I would have been as far as I can tell. Compared to when I smoked, I almost never get sick. No constant hacky smokers cough either. What you are doing is unlike anything that I can think of. Only someone who has quit smoking can ever understand what it is like. I have tried to explain to people who never have smoked and it is impossible for them to understand what it takes to do it. Please know that you can do it and that while it is not always easy, it can be done. Every day that passes is one more step toward easier days. Don't get discouraged when you have those moments of craving. Fight through them. Rest assured, if you work yourself out like crazy, the craving will die. As time passes, you will have less and less cravings. For me, it was not until about 3 months of not smoking before I really felt like I was going to be successful, but indeed I was. At six months though, no problem, I knew that I would never return to being a smoker. I wish you the best of luck. You will be very glad that you made this decision if you stick to it.
  15. The Achmed the dead terrorist bits are the best stuff that I have seen from him. Very good stuff. I hope he keeps up his bits with that character.
  16. Regardless of what side a person would take on the subject this man really has very little logic present here. He is bashing these vehicular features by pointing out that they are illegal and while that is not the only criticism that he provides, he makes that a very specific point multiple times. His suggested solution is to commit illegal acts against those who have loud pipes and tint. fortunately he left a couple of personal photographs so that any one who ends up with a brick through their illegally tinted windows can find him and thank him properly .
  17. True, but if you don't have the welder, have an exhaust shop do some bends for you. Anyone decent shouldn't charge too much. Really though, I hate to seem rude, but if someone is going to really build a turbo car and they can't or are not willing to involve a pro or two, they really need to learn to prioritize if they don't A. Own a welder B. Have access to one You can apply A and B to a lot of tools. If it is a DSM, you better be sure you have flex sockets...grumbling over excessive expense cause they cost way too much...since the angle adapter combined with a socket is too much to try to fit in some of the critical areas that seem to always need attention. Also, don't get me wrong when I'm talking about paying a pro to do the work. I'm all for DIY, no one touches my cars, that is how I learn/have learned to do any of this stuff. My point is just about spending big $$ on a turbo kit but not being willing to spend the $$ on the tools or persons to install it. Like the sub-title on the tools section on the forum here. Tools - we are nothing without them (or something close to that, I was too lazy to go get a direct quote).
  18. Some alterations required... No joke, it seems to me like a generic kit would be easier in almost all cases (of course, the kit would have to be specific to the manifold flange of the vehicle and the downpipe, assuming the kit comes with one, will have to mate with the cat or center section. Other than that, they should be a generic. Give a full plumbing set for the intercooler with a bunch of couplings and elbows, and make sure that there is a short section with the BOV flange on it. That seems to be the worst problem. In one kit that I installed for a friend, the kit that he ordered had the flange on the turbo intake tube (I was surprised that it had the intake tube, they usually cheap out on that). I don't think the turbo would have lasted more than a week and a half if I had left it like that.
  19. Looks like I would be back to smoke signals cause there is no way I would pay that.
  20. I've never seen or experienced a real bolt on turbo kit without mods/customizing required.
  21. Have him buy a generic kit with specs on the turbo matching his needs. He will have to frankenstein a couple of things, get a turbo manifold for the closest thing that he can find, chop it up and weld it to the flange from his header, that kind of thing, but if there are no kits specifically for his car then that is always an option. Hell, you can scrounge up the parts pretty cheap if you are willing to spend the time and search.
  22. Yeah, it was a little cramped. So, I'm curious, what kind of car are you working with? Do you have anything in the works to help deal with the extra heat? The new project is a car that I am kind of waiting for. The current owner and I have agreed to a price. Schedule conflicts (basically me working full time 7-5 and going to school in the evenings coupled with martial arts classes) kept us from getting this done last week. I checked it out and thought it over and had to work the deal over the phone. His wife was pregnant and very much due anytime. She delivered and they should be home by now, but I want to give him a bit to enjoy his new bundle of joy. We are supposed to schedule a time this week for me to buy it and bring it home. From there I am going to have to do a tranny swap. Then I'll change the timing belt, tensioner, tune it up and then let the fun begin. Oh, and no, it is a 1992 Eagle Talon TSI AWD 6 bolt block, 4 bolt rear. Currently all stock except for a turbo timer and cat-back exhaust. Basically a virgin. I get a new transmission in the deal since the original is screwed. I have been searching for a 1G for awhile and it is rare to see any this clean and un-raped.
  23. NOOOO my brotha. It was at one brief point (about 2 weeks of my ownership). Then it was an FP Big T28, then a small 16g which didn't take long to kill (courtesy of faulty HKS SSQV...never again will I even give one of those a chance, especially since I had to pull that turbo and put in the new one in the middle of January in my garage which I had to leave open for me to be able to work where I needed), and from their she was fitted with a Big 16g with a little extra care from Forced Performance. The specs on the wheels were not released to me. It was that turbo which required the addition of the external wastegate. It could have survived with an internal actuator in theory, but I think that boost creep would have been an issue. There was actually some speculation that the Tial 38mm wouldn't be sufficient but it worked like a champ.
  24. Turbochargers = heat! Everything (for the most part) under your hood is going to be seeing higher temps when the turbo is installed. HO alts usually create a bit more heat. Not necessarily a problem but it can be. Example - my last turbo car - 99 DSM Look on the heat shield on the turbo manifold in the area immediately around the wastegate. This picture was taken after a 10 minute (probably a bit less) test drive after some maintenance. The heat shield had been painted w/ way high temp paint (ford-ish) blue. It was left to cure for several days (as was the car) before it was reinstalled along with some other things. I took it out, drove 3 mins. or so to get to a somewhat safe area to run and I opened it up. I ran hard for 2 minutes tops, returned home and blue had become bright white. Just something to think about. Edit: PS: for those of you who like forced induction, I should have my next project car within a week or two. I will try to remember to put up some pics. It will be a long time between stock and finished though.
