Comps and Full-Range speakers. What's the difference?

components (separates) allow you to stage the system. for example, you could put a tweeter in your dash or a pillar for a fuller sound stage, instead of having just a coaxial playing in the door. and then of course there is the pricing and the crossovers but you already know that. otherwise, you'll find that many speakers (or at least comparable ones) are offered in component and full range variety.

There can be a huge difference, as stated already you can set your staging because of having a separate tweeter and sometimes even a separate midrange. Setting your stage can make your music feel more real and alot warmer.

Besides the difference in staging there is the difference in quality. Most of the time the component sets are made of slightly better materials than their coaxial alternatives.

Then there is the crossover which does alot. In coaxial speaker the little capacitors on them may give a high pass crossover to the tweeters on them, but quite ofter there is no low pass for the woofer section, making the woofer work slightly harder and produce muddy highs, which conflict with the tweeters. In component set the midbass driver, (and in 3 way sets the midrange driver) have not only high pass crossovers, but low pass crossovers, keeping the drivers in the range they are best at reproducing, so you don't wind up with overlapping muddy signals. The one downside is that the crossovers take some power to run, but not much.
