using diodes to step up voltage

Recommended Posts

The voltage drop across a diode is .7 volts so I could see why you are seeing an increase you are feeding a lower voltage to the sense input of the regulator basically tricking the regulator to charge at a higher set point voltage. Same thing the vcm does just not with diodes I believe they use a micro controller.

exactly. I was gaining .5-.6 lol.

lower tuning is just hard. I was surprised how loud 145 sounds at 35hz, and how quiet 145 sounds at 50hz.

You may also want to recommend people not to connect the battery until you check the alt charging voltage.

People may not want to risk their 12v battery getting like 17volts. I know you said what resistors and alt you have, but the resistors may have different results on different alts. They also might try different size resistors.

DIODES! DO NOT use resistors!

If you disconnect your battery how can you start your car to see voltage? I WOULD START SMALL with the diodes. I began with this setup. Just be careful, I can't stress that enough.

Unhook your alt, and start your car. Leaving you able to test your alt without ruining your 12v system.

How the hell can you test an alt with out it spinning at ~700 RPM's? :trippy:

I meant your Alt wire that goes to your battery. And yeah. lol. I didn't mean the belt.

In most cars if the output wires are un hooked most if not all of the vehicle is disabled... Not a bad idea if it actually worked though.

Didn't know that. But worth a try. But what if you had a secondary battery laying around, ground it to the car, and alt to the positive, and try it out. that way it still charges, and you don't destory anything in the process, That would work wouldn't it?

I just went and checked. im at 15.7 cold and 15.2 - 15.3 Warm. i was hoping to gain another .5 warm but looks like I wont be able to unless I use a switch or a relay to add or subtract the extra Diode needed...

Would 1N914 Type Diodes work? I got 50 of them, Not saying i should use them all, but if i screw one up, i can use another.

I will have to find a way on how this work's with a 1995 Plymouth Voyager.

Whats the amp rating of that diode? I went with 6 amp diodes.

Those look really small. The ones I used were pretty large.

Try it. I'll try to post a pic of what I used.
