Birch vs MDF

Real birch is damn near 3times the price of MDF. So if its almost the same price as MDF, then it is not real birch. It has a Birch layer on the top and bottom, the inner cores of the wood is normal everyday plywood with knotholes and everything else. Plywood like what is used for your sub-floors in your house, or your exterior walls of the house before the insulation and siding.

MDF ruffly $24-30 per sheet

Birch Plywood $35-40 per sheet (normally 5-7 layers thick)

Birch hardwood grade a/b $69-79 per sheet (normally 11-13 layers thick of all birch)

These are rough prices for 3/4inch 4'by8'foot sheets.

Also the Birch hardwood comes in 48inches by 96inches

While MDF usually is 49inches by 97inches.

If your choice is between MDF, and the cheap birch plywood, MDF ALL THE WAY! The 2 thin cores of the cheap birch does not make the wood denser then the MDF, also it is normal low grade plywood for inner cores, so if your rounding over edges and hit a knothole, or there is a knothole on your cut, you will notice a big gapping void that you will have to fill.

quality birch...
