I basically was looking into the same design with the same questions and issue with wasted airspace...

and about that gap. ive never encountered having to have the gap for the external aero. but i would think that the sound would resonated the port. making another noise in the gap in between the box. almost like a tuning fork.

and also i think your going to need way more port. especially for a level 5 12. i have a level 3 12 in a fourth order with an external port and i actually need more port area. i know with aeros you can take off a little because of the design. but IMO i think more port is neccessary. especially since most of the sound comes out of port. anyways.

also another thing to think about. ive never owned a level 5 but ive heard numerous times that they dont like the sealed boxes to begin with. so inverting the woofer would allow for a more even pressure on the cone itself. (thats just a thought i have about it, idk if its an actual concern) i guess thats some stuff to think about.

not to thread jack but i out 45's in the 3 corners..

back on topic, im tuned just to see what you do. small 4th orders are a pita to get figured out. if you mount inverted good f'in luck mounting it with that huge motor in the way...

edit idk if the triangular sealed portion is ideal.. but it certainly makes building it simple. i just thought of it, drew it up and decided wtf why not.

i find it much easier to mount the sub first on the baffle then put the baffle in last. (well the tops last. but you know what i mean)

i guess... but loading in an 80lb baffle or w.e it weighs and positioning it with a huge weight hanging on it would be tricky but with patience it could be done.. what happens when you want to take it out...the baffle is in there now with minute room to work..

i mean you could build it however you want if you plan on sealing it up and then its permanently glued and taking the sub out means tearing the box down, but having the ability to remove the sub and invert it if you choose or change sub or w.e and still have a functioning box makes it a lil tricky :P

well considering 4th order designs are so tricky in that of themselves. changing the position of the sub to inverted or not would change the tuning of the box drastically. so i mean if you really needed the sub to be changed youll most likely build an entirely new box to begin with.

yes i know and 80lb baffle would be a bitch lol. but its just an idea. i mean i figured if stang wants that monster in the box he doesnt care how it gets done lol.

edit: if you wanted to be able to reopen and open the box. you could just use foam tape and alot of screws. just a thought. i guess it depends on what you want the box to do

your right. but you could be like Ray whos like mehhh.. i didnt account for displacement anyway.. lmao hes a beast :drinks:

foam tape... hmmm interesting, i use silicone on the removable seal, its a pita and you have to resurface but it works.. foam tape ill try that next time i open er up to reseal and see what happens :P
