KCCharger Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 For the longest I have always wanted to custom fab a Ipad into a fabricated bezel in my Charger. But, I saw the Archos 101 (10.1" screen) tablet and now it has me thinking of ditching the Ipad route. Has anyone done a successful clean install with one of these tablets, if so got any pointers? I wanna run Audio & Video off it especially since it has HDMI out. I am assuming for video I could use a HDMI to RCA convert cable to stream video to my headrest. Anyway, this is a thought but if it can be done successful it may no longer just be a thought. Thanks for any pointers in advance....
skyhighcaraudio Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 I have done one ipad in a friends 02 tahoe's dash. it did not have video out like you said you wanted (it ran to his head unit and controlled everything off the ipad. I got an ipad 2 on sunday and have started (like 65% done) fabing it up in my dash dezel (03 Sierra 2500hd) and so far it looks a 100 times better than the first one i did. the ipad in my truck will be running to my EQ's AUX input. so the ipad will charge because of the connector i used..its a regular RCA to ipod connection but has charging/ground wire coming off it that are now hooked up). the reason i did it like this is because i wanted to be able to still hook my phone to my HU's ipod connect and have the option to switch to the ipad at any time and have the audio out still work without switching any connections and basically for ease of use. To be honest i know nothing about the other tablet you are talking about but it has a bigger screen than the ipad so it would be super sick. The reason i made the examples of myself is because the concept is the same just with different equipment. So the issues that i hit will probably be the same stuff you will and you will have to go about it in a similar way. if you have any questions feel free to ask and good luck!! It just slides out the top of the bezel then when it slides back into the housing for it it automatically plugs in. A, over long distances, performance becomes flakey, b. The plug won't stay in very well with vibrations you'll have in a car. As for using an HDMI to RCA adapter, you would need something that will convert HDMI's digital signal into something analog. Some protected content may not play due to HDCP. And you will have to find some kind of way to power it. Can all of this be done? Yes. But it will likely be a headache. The easiest route would be to find a tablet with an analog video out...or a tablet that has a large aftermarket... Anti Peel and Seal...lol You may be offended by the above. Guess I'll keep looking and see if I can find a Analog Video Out tablet like BJD3 suggested. I agree deeje, I still wanna do the Android route due to the versality of the OS. Sure it's a lot more money, but imo it's worth the extra 200-300 bucks. It's got 4G capabilities, which are blazing fast on Verizon's network..also has the newest Android platform; Honeycomb, has GPS Navigation, full Web Browser, and you can even receive text messages on it. It also has the mobile hotspot for when you go on road trips, all your passengers can connect their devices to it! Handy feature. In my opinion, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is well worth the extra money, and has a lot more features. Just something to think about... First System 2002 Impala LS 3.8L V6, 128,365k miles. I love the Galaxy S line, I actually own a Samsung Galaxy S 4g, second Galaxy phone and love it so I know I would love the tablet also. But the downside is that I do not think the extra $200-300 would be worth for A. I have Tmobile service and B. I'm not worried about being able to send receive/text. I have my Galaxy S 4g Rooted and running a custom ROM so in the sense I need an internet connection on the Archos, I can enable mobile hotspot on my vibrant and that gives the Archos a wifi connection at 4g speeds. Plus the Archos comes updated on Android 2.3.8 and it downloads any new updates as soon as it picks up a wifi signal.
