That prevents the wood from soaking it up. And I've had good luck with the krylon fusion products. Primer, color, and clear. A tub of the elmers putty is around $10 from lowes or home depot, and it's a pretty decent amount and you could probably skim coat the entire box with on tub, depending on the size.
