the opening of the port is 3 inches wide, and stays the same width the lenght of the port

14.5 inches tall, thats the port height inside the box, the box height itself is 16

alright, sounds much better than a 3x3" port. sounds like enough port area but I'm no port expert. My guess is your amp or some setting somewhere.

Box sounds right. I have to agree with skippy that there is a setting that is wrong somewhere between your headunit and amp.
