wanting to make a high exersion subwoofer

and ive seen alot of threads were u can be a dick and others where you can be helpfull i have ideas thats why i ask i have went threw with some of the things ive asked i dont have alot of money so im rather limited thats why you see more ideas then actions would you like pics of my se's would that make you post something helpfull or?

arnt the stock xxx pretty bad ass as far as xmax goes anyway?

you dont want to spend a lot of money, yet you want a level 5 or 6 motor which costs probably a couple hundred dollars right there. and hes right, ive seen thread upon thread of you wanting to make a subwoofer, but you never do, even after all the help you've been given you could've probably made like 10 subs

edit: i also still fail to see why you absolutely need a woofer that can move a lot. since when does the amount of excursion the SOLE factor in how loud it will be?

Why what are you thinking will happen by having a higher xmax? For one it will have horrible handling and more likely to have coil rock. Those are two reasons why I wouldn't want something like that, and there are a few others I can think of too, but you have to learn I guess.

Subs are engineered for a reason.

Sure there's a few people out there that can throw some parts together and have a great sub, but they all have a ton of experience working with subs that are already designed, or understand the engineering behind a speaker.

What people don't think of when they think "hi xmax" is the more a sub moves back and forth the longer stroke is ONLY good for very low frequencys. You can't do hi xmax on a mid to high frequency woofer. The time it takes a coil to move 1" is quicker than a 2" or 3" excursion. Like the xxx re subs the xmax is so high they only sound good below 25 hz or so( besides the smaller cone area models) . If your looking for sound quality don't bother.

Then why do I see a sq based sub with 30mm of xmax? And just because you throw a tall coil into the sub doesn't mean the motor will have the space and depth to allow such throw...thus major former damage and blown sub

SPL motors most likely wouldn't be good for a high xmax build. Since from what I know spl motors have extremely tight gaps, and high xmax subs typically use motors with "loose" gaps. And sounding good is usually user preference. user A might like subs that play tight high bass notes where others might like loud n low. Typically a sub with a high xmax can play lower notes louder. But may not be louder than another sub. I plan on building two 15s using ti baskets and 3hp motors with a lower fs and a relatively high xmax
