Cardboardcat15
So I'm getting my Mechman 220 installed soon (like tomorrow maybe), and I need to charge my batteries up. I have a Shumacher charger that I got for like 35 bucks with the AGM setting and everything (XC10), but the problem is that the charger charges up to 15.5 volts even on the slowest charge setting. Now, when I got my XS Power battery, there was a big orange flyer that said to not charge AGM batteries over 14.4 volts. Now I am really strapped for cash right now, so I don't have the money to buy a charger that has adjustable voltage and all that. So I am wondering if it is possible to mod a battery chargers output voltage to a fixed voltage, or if anyone has ever done this before. Maybe even if it's not even internally modding the charger, just something to regulate the voltage the charger puts out. I don't want to ruin my batteries. Any help is appreciated! Cardboardcat15
No one? Maybe not even a mod, just a suggestion of a good batter charger that charges properly around 14.4-5 that wont cost me 200 dollars, if possible. Quote My Channel on YouTube. d3dreaper
i would suggest getting a resistor on that charger you have. what kind of amperage does it output?? Cardboardcat15
Well, it only puts out 10 amps on the fastest charge and when I talked to Mechman when my alt died they told me that lower sitting batteries can hurt alternators. So I want to make sure that im not killing my alt, I can't really afford to send it back because my old alt doesn't fit. I'm trying to get these batteries to the proper sitting voltage so I'm not jeopordizing any of my equipment. Quote My Channel on YouTube. d3dreaper
they told me that lower sitting batteries can hurt alternators. Lower sitting batteries? you mean a drained? Cause if that's the case then i haven't heard of that (maybe i should look into that.... but if you want to charge your batt's with that charger you could invest in a 1.2 ohm resistor that's rated for 120 watts.... I haven't found a resistor that big yet though trying to find one lol edit...i have a feeling my math may be a tad wrong there.... EBW
It won't charge at 15.5 unless your batts are flat as the amps come up the volts go down. yea a huge bank of resisors lol I've got a few thousand but I have a feeling that wouldn't be enough. Put a dmm on it the hook up your charger and watch the voltage if it gets up over 15.2 or so un hook it but my alt in my truck starts out at 14.7 so .5 volts more isn't extreme by any means. Edit If your batts are flat and you slam on your system it puts a huge load on the alt and cause avoidable strain on you electrical, not just your alt either you amps like good power most will get mad if you run them on fluctuating electrical system Edited September 11, 2011 by EBW Quote Kenwood KIV-BT900 Front Stage RF 400-4 Runs off dedicated 4 awg ofc RE 6.5 125.5. Ray
Hell you only need to do 10amps for 20 min per battery Quote 2008 California state record holder 157.2 Bassrace2009 California state record holder 157.0 BassraceRollin 50's 158.7db2009 King of Cali Bassrace2009 USACi score 160.5 @ 42hz
Cardboardcat15
Thanks for all the help guys! Well, I'll try putting my redtop that sits at 12.2-12.3 on the charger, but what got me as weird was I put my brand new D1200 on it and t still went up to 15.5... I'll take ray's advice though, hopefully it wont hit the batt's too hard. Quote My Channel on YouTube.
