Cheap line array project

Recommended Posts

Out of boredom with my first real paycheck, I'm thinking about making a set of small line array speakers (8 small speakers + a single 10" subwoofer in each tower) just for at the house use. PE has some cheap 4" midbass drivers for $5 or $10 apiece, and the sub option is still in the air, depending on what I want to use it worth. Think it's worth splitting a couple of the drivers for upper high range, or just run all 8 in each tower with the highs, or add a couple 1" tweeters?

If I were you, I would take a look at the speaker building projects they have on p-e.

Find a couple you like and use those as the basis for your design.

this sounds very interesting keep me posted on this, i'm curious to see how you wire this. i'm trying to build floorstanding towers myself and any help would be much appreciated.

good luck!

Just say no to Ground Pounder Customs.

More box builds

some cars do over 170db with one sub, so clearly my two 12"s can do that in my car, with my knowledge too! look out bitches!

I'm with captain stupid.

Thought about it, but I'd rather try it from scratch...:P

You could do a big build with the 97¢ 5 1/4 woofers that's on parts express. Lots of speakers!

I was thinking about it, but the specs kinda scare me...at least power wise...

GRS 4PF-8: 40w RMS/70w Max 8 Ohms, 100-10,000 Hz, Fs 98hz, 84dB 1W/1m SPL, $5

Sony 5.25" Woofer: 20w RMS/40w Max 8 Ohms, 80-6000 Hz, Fs 81 Hz, 85.3dB 1W/1m SPL, $1

There'll be two subwoofers, one on each side.

Will do. I'm not an expert by any means of the word, but I'll give it my best shot.

Here's what I'm planning on right now..

Tweeter: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=270-175 (1 per 2-4 woofers)

Woofer: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=299-012 or http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=292-404 (8-16 total)

Amplifier: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-797 (1 for time being, may do 2 in 4 ohm operation after next paycheck)

Subwoofer: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=295-486 (tuned to 26-30Hz)

Will primarily be for TV general use, with X-Box 360 use as well, and some music.

P-E is the bomb. I have never had a bad experience with them.

I'm all    for this one.

Curious- are you going to have everything firing forward or go for a dipole arrangement? I built my 5.1 system, but all on-axis. I often wonder how a dipole would work. Seems like it would be better in a strictly stereo arrangement like you are going to do than a surround sound setup.

what are your crossover plans?

Still deciding. Thinking about doing a single 250w panel each, then when I get subs, adding a HPF to those and another sub amplifier. 4 ohm load in each cabinet, still deciding.

Just straight firing forward. Dunno much about dipoles, don't want to complicate things. It's just going to be a 2.1 setup, mostly music/TV/gaming. Just gotta decide what I want to tune the boxes to, if I want to port the tops or not...

Final choices:

Tweeter: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=270-176 (still debating on 1 or 2 each cab

Woofer: www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=292-404 (16 total, $60, look a LOT more reliable...)

Subwoofer: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=295-486 (tuned to 26-30Hz)

Terminals: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=095-282

Sub Amplifier: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-804 (1 per sub)

Mid/High Amplifier: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-797 (1 per side)

Only problem I see is building a narrow cabinet for the mids/high's, because of the size of the plate amplifier... I do have the option of using two of these ( http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-383 ) with one channel running 4 woofers & one tweeter...plus I can mount it into the box itself...sound like a bad idea?

Options available, but price is a big issue at the moment...will be drawing Sketchup drawings shortly...

Any movement on this. I have 28 of the sony buyout 5 1/4" I plan on using a single vifa tweeter for each tower. 12 per side. They have a nasty peak at 5k so you should cross them lower and not run them fullrange. Here is a pic of one I saw built on audiokarma.

I plan on building a variation of this. Double baffle with a 1/2" for the speakers and a 3/4" layer for strength. Not going to go to crazy. I think they will be 100 dollars to build the pair when they're finished.
