tonedeaf Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 So going down te road today my radio shut off and I smelt smoke. First thought was the amp although it wasn't powering anything. Amp was connected power/ground/remote wire. No RCAs or speaker wire attatched. I stepped on the gas a decent amount and the headunit powered off and I smelt smoke. I pull over to find smoke coming out of the speaker terminals by the remote wire. I disconnected the amp as it now would t turn on and I tied up all my wires. My question is how did the amp blowup without powering anything nor even getting a signal? I haven't tested the remote wire...but could it have shorted somehow? All wires were firmly attatched and didn't ground out, so what could it be and any guesses on getting it fixed? If it was just bad terminals it should be cheap enough, just pisses me off it's the second amp in a few months as well as my sub pre outs failing miserably. (last amp just isn't getting a signal, no magic smoke)
Joe X Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 You can test if the amp turns on just by making a connection between the +12 terminal and the remote on terminal of the amp itself with the wire coming from the HU disconnected, you have to make sure your ground is good bare metal to bare metal firmly bolted to the chassis. If lights come up on the amp then it's probably ok. The next step would be check the HU.

tonedeaf Posted October 19, 2011 Author Report Posted October 19, 2011 To reiterate: Have amp connected with no RCAs attached and no speaker wife connected to any kind of sub or speaker. Suddenly amp decides to start smoking through the terminals. What's is the cause of this when it's getting no signal? Why is blown or light be? I have it torn apart and would love to be told what to look for. Would be nice for it to be a cheap fix, but any help in even telling me why it happened is welcome.

Joe X Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 tonedeaf, if any smoke is coming out of the amp itself from any opening your amp is done. Nothing you can do about that except removing it and sending it for service to audioque. If you have the RCA input terminals disconnected you should lower the gain to minimum to make sure any form of noise present is not amplified. Can't say that blew the amp, specially if you had another issue recently two consecutively damaged amps is no coincidence. To start I would just remove the amp and check if everything else is working normally.
