How many inches do I have to take off?

Recommended Posts

I need an answer before tomorrow.

I own a Craftsman DTY 4000 lawn mower. Since winter is on it's way I took the mower deck off which gave me around 8"-10" more ground clearance. I then was in need of some more speed, instead of the stock 5.3mph. I changed the rear axle pulley from the stock 8" to an aftermarket 3.5" belt pulley. I forgot about buying a new belt when I got the smaller pulley.

The belt is designed for an 8" pulley and I have a 3.5" pulley. The stock belt is 94.75" long. I NEED to know what size belt I have to buy in order fit the new 3.5" pulley and keep the same amount tension I had before the swap.

Please help! :good:

Get a piece of string and loop it from pulley to pulley... Then take the string off and measure. Done.

Lol glad I could help. I've just done it too many times doing A/C and Power Steering deletes on cars, so that method is pretty beaten into my brain :good:

Needed to make room for a turbo!! Not in my car though. I like my power steering too much!

Did you take the deck off and put on a new pulley for a reason? Do you use it to plow?

I just took the deck off to shed some weight and gain ground clearance. Reason I put a new pulley on is for more speed/fun.

It's like buying a supercar, sure it can go 180+mph, but actully doing 180 for an extended period of time is not something most ppl do.

the string trick works or you can cut the old belt to where you want it then drill a hole at each end the use a peice of thick 1 starnd wire and link the 2...just be sure to twist the wire opposite side of the pully on the belt...works for me when i dont wanna drive 30 mins to get a belt
