18 inch subs that don't take a lot of cubic feet to sound good?

Depends what sort of sound you want. IF you want LOTs of impact and not worried about the roll off, sure stick 2 BL 18s in 11-12 cubes, they will work just fine. If you want smooth sound with little more in the way of a shallow low end roll off, 2 15s.

Theres alot of confusion as to certain manufactuers claiming drivers to work in certain sized enclosures. Bottom line. Comes down to motor strength. That doesn't mean one brand has more or less, every 'motor' peaks different, some just peak others have peaks in different areas depending upon the way they are FEA'd.

Fi DO work in small enclosures, extremely well!

I concur 100%. I've got my mayhem 18's each seeing 3.9 after everything, and they play all music well plus crunch numbers. believe it or not, this combo has a really wide bandwidth, providing fantastic transients, gets the lows, delivers the upper end without sounding flat and hollow, isn't peaky in one spot. bottom line, just flat out perform.
