FI & AQ Focus: BTL 18's Walled.

Recommended Posts

After working through our family death, I was able to get some more work done on the wall. I layed down some glass mat on the corners, painted the inside and the port, and got my baffle cut out.

Unfortunately, after getting all this work done, I was extremely unhappy with the outcome. Due to this, I did not get any pics of my failure. I just sat down by myself and came up with a new design.

Okay...so for my new design, I used all the same dimensions of the wall, but moved the port and layed the on its back. So now, the subs will be firing up, and the port will be facing forward. Like I stated previously, I was just really unhappy with the way the wall was looking, and decided to go with this. Now, in the end, this will be walled off. It will just be a different type of wall, that I have never seen done before.

So for starters, I cleaned out everything but the batts and the floor.

Then I proceeded to mount the amps directly to the floor, and build a frame surrounding them. My entire plan was to encase the amps under the box, and supply them with ample air flow. You can't really tell in the pics, but I did put a pulling fan at the rear of the frame, and a pushing fan at the front.

Next I rebuilt the box, and got it placed inside the vehicle, along with a cover for the battery rack. As you can see, the box was placed on top of the amp rack. I did have some complications with this design, because I did not plan ahead. The subs, once fabricated, would not fit in between the box and the roof, so I could not place them in the box. So therefore this was also up for redesigning.

After a short time, I pulled out the "under the box" amp rack, and started trying different placements for a new amp rack.

Lastly, I was able to get the front stage of my AQ TS-6.5 component set installed. I also got a couple of packages in the mail, which were my REx8D4's which are my mid bass subs that will be hooked up to the Hifonics Zues 110.4 along with the rear stage AQ components. I also got my circle jig in the mail for my router.

My back window seemed to be a little cluttered with all the manufacturer decals I had put on over the past year, so I decided to clean it up a bit. I went with a Team AudioQue top rocker, and a Fi Audio bottom rocker.

Over the weekend I decided to get some more work done on the box.

To start off with, I removed the box from the vehicle, and pulled out the bracing (the bracing was done wrong, and I will cover this later). I then proceeded to remove the spray on bedliner that I had covered the box with previously.

Thats ALOT of dust...

If you hadn't noticed before the top piece of the baffle was made from several pieces of wood pieced together. I can assure you that the baffles underneath the top one provide plenty of support. But to I wanted the entire box to come out smoothe, so I started adding plenty of wood filler.

Okay, so the story on my bracing. To start off with, I used 1/2 inch lag bolt. But when I started, I did not use the washer. But my dumbass didn't have the correct size hole, and when I drilled it, the nut actually fit inside the hole. So I pulled it apart, and used washers. I installed the nut and washer on the inside top and bottom, then filled the hole with silicone. While it was still wet, I installed the nut and bolt on the outside. This pushed out all the excess silicone, and made a sufficient airtight bond.

After all the wood filler dried, I sanded the box down with progressive sand paper. I started off with 80grit, then moved up to 120grit and then 220grit.

The next day I came out, applied more filler, and resanded once again. Once I finished the sanding, I proceeded to apply primer to the entire box.

After the primer dried, I applied a coat of red to the outside of the box. After it dried, my plan was to sand it lightly, and repeat until I had a solid coat. But once I was done with my second application and sanding, I really liked the way it looked. It was more of a weathered look. So I decided to keep it this way. I will be applying clear coat to the box to make it shine, as well as some specially made AQ and FI decals.

And to answer any questions or worries, I do have plenty of vids. Look in my sig below, and click the link on the right...it will take you to my page. I just haven't had a chance to place them in the build log yet. I've got to go to work for the night, but I will be placing plenty more pics and vids up over the next few days.

My original build had a Sundown SAZ2000. I traded that out with The Rattrodder for his AQ2200

This is just a video of me tearing apart the amp and showing off the guts.

Next up was to order some things from AudioQue that I was missing.

I was tired of not having any bass, so I made a temp box for the 15" so I could play it while I was waiting on my other sub and recones to come in.

Me and the ol' lady were shopping around in best buy, and we ran across this little steal.

Now it was time to get some power to the Kenwood.
