Break In

Just curious what everyone thinks about subwoofer break in. I've seen a lot of stuff out there anywhere from you'll break ur sub if u don't to it's a complete myth that u have to break in a woofer. Anybody know if u really need to or not??

what ive know guys to do if you want it to be musical or are going to SQ then yes break in is highly recommended. but most of my spl guys just crank it right out of the gate.

Some stuff I say yes, I do it. Other things I dont have to worry about it.

Only break-in I really worry about is woofers with multiple hard spider setups and are so stiff you barly move the cone when pushing on it. Things like your btl's, mayhems's.

Some woofers like the SMD sub, has a multi spider pack, but much looser, so it can take abuse right out the box.

Then when you look at the sundown line, every woofer is tested before shipment and does a rigorous free air cycle, so putting power to them right away usually not a problem.

Then companies like Digital Designs, and Audio que, say to break them in slowly, and the woofers will play lower and louder. I dont care for their suspensions much, but they are fairly stiffer but not as stiff as some, and its good to break them in slowly.

An of coarse if you recone any woofer, you should let the spiders loosen up. Like I said above with sundown, where they are played and tested pre shipment, and you buy a recone, that recone will never had that pre breakin or free air test, so those spider will be supper stiff.

Mainly, imo its always good to loosen spiders up before going hard on a woofer, thats what the break in is... other wise your coil is going to want to shoot out the motor, the spider is going to stop it, and could cause glue failures or torn spiders around the triple joints.

The subs I listed I all had a lot of hands on use with in my vehicle, or lots of reconing from others user error.

Now woofers like Pyle, Pioneer, Boss, Alpine, Power Acoustik, and a lot of other soft spider woofers, no need for break ins.

Thanks I have a power acoustik mofo 154x so according to what u said i don't really need to break it in. It was a little stiff so i am doin a little break in but it's good to know i don't have to spend a huge amount of time doin it.

I never broke mine in. The thing only has 2 super soft spiders. It broke in after around 30 seconds of playtime for me (yours might be a bit longer. I was pushing xmech right out of the box lol)

Yeah I just did it for the sake of being able to litterally get fully output from it the second i finish wiring it up in my car, because it'll be a long time before i do so (cause i don't even have the car yet)
