911-02r external reg wiring

Recommended Posts

Truck is 01 Suburban. I have two Mechman rebuilt alts that are setup for an external regulator. I have the 911-02r External Regulator. It has ground, power and field terminals on it. My alts have ground and field....how do I hook this thing up? I was told I need a relay by someone else, which I have a Bosch 5 pin. Just need to know how to hook everything up. BTW I have two alts that need to be wired up to this thing.

Trying to work on it today so any help would be great.

I have one 250amp mcr ...with transpo reg. And i ran. The field term. To the reg. And the 12+v i put a ring terminal on it and put it on the charging post of the alt and i ran a short ground from the regulator to the firewall near where i mounted the ext. Reg.....and it runs fine no need for a relay .....one problem u might have is one regulator is good for 15amps Max. Not sure if two field wires from your dual alts will be more than the rated 15 amps for one unit...u possibly might need two regulators???.... not sure on the dual alt part

I relay is only necessary if you can't find a solid clean turn on circuit for the regulator.

Assume that the POS terminal on the regulator needs 15 amp capacity. That means you should have a 10 / 12 awg wire that is hot only when the ignition is in the run position. It is also important that this wire does not have any voltage drop in it- the voltage should read more or less exactly the same on the POS terminal of the regulator, as the positive terminal of the battery. The regulator senses voltage from the POS terminal, so if it is lower than the battery voltage from crummy wiring, the alternator(s) will overcharge to compensate. This is why some people run a relay- so they can run a beefy wire straight from the battery terminal, through the relay, to the POS terminal of the regulator with no voltage drop. Then they trigger the relay with some wormy little circuit on the vehicle that is ignition switched. Long story short- use a relay if you can't find an existing ignition switched circuit on the car capable of carrying 15 amps with little or no voltage drop.

also , make sure both alternators have the same output curve, otherwise they will not share the load equally, being run off the same regulator.

Cool thank you MechMan! I did see a vid on YouTube about the installation with the relay, but I was wondering if a relay was necessary! It is hard to find a regular wiring diagram for this!
