i am going to use 4 gage wire is that safe and what size fuse should i use?

Totally depends on what kind and how much equipment you wanna run.

List the components in your system and any mods/upgrades you have done thus far.

i am running a pioneer 5900 ib cd player, a mtx ta 7801 amp, a kinetik power cell hc600, 2 alpine type r 15s (new model) in a box built to their specs they hit hard but i have a little dimming. im going to eventually put a bigger alternator but someone said that the big 3 would help.

Well who ever told you THAT.....was correct.

It will help to minimize the dimming assuming your electrical is enough for what ur running to begin with.

From the info given-doing the big 3 with 4ga would be an improvement over NOT doing it obviously and it would help, and it would EVEN prolly be sufficient for what your running right now....but it's kinda the sort of thing you'd really only wanna do once to save oyurself having to undo the work of running the 4ga wires just to have to replace them with BIGGER cables later when you upgrade-which it sounds like you plan on doing.

They call it the BIG 3 because generally you wanna use the biggest cable possible for max flow of electrical current.

I'd say consider what upgrades you plan on doing in the future-if you can see yourself with amps totalling MORE THAN 1200rms, you should do the big 3 with 1/0ga cables and the fusing will depend on how much power you are trying to pull thru each cable.

Look at the fuses IN your amp or check it's owners manual for the MAX power consumption in AMPERES/amps and make sure you fuse equal to or just above THAT total...i.e. if you have 80amps used by your amplifiers, use an 80-100amp fuse.

The other theory is to fuse according to your alternator output on the cable comong from the alt + post.

Just go as high or a bit higher than your alternator is rated (in amperes) so you are not limiting it in any but will be protected from short circuits.

i have a total of 80 amps in my amp and i think my alternator is only 130 amps. so would it be smart to run 100 amp fuse and use either 1/0ga? and one other question the hot wire from the alternator (in the big 3) i run that to my pos. side on my battery right? ill probably just add another amp but im not looking to go all out like some of the people on here. its nice ! i just dont have the money. i have already been raped for $3,000 for what i have so far. but thats what happens when you dont want to wait.

yes you can. and a 150 amp fuse holder is the same as a 300. just gotta change out the fuse ;)

So basically, I don't have to use battery terminals, I can just use ring terminals instead? That means I don't have to cut wires right off my battery like I would have to with battery terminals.
