Bass imaging?

There is no such thing as imaging for sub bass frequencies, as they can't be located. Imaging refers to the location and depth of where the sound seems to be coming from.

If you can not feel the bass tapping off the dash (normally referred to as "up front and on the dash" bass response) in MECA and USACI SQ competition, you don't have your system set up correctly ... I thought we all went over this on SSA ???

I might be weird but I can definitely hear where the higher bass is coming from.

Mostly low tuned bass guitars/Kick drums, anything lower than that though yeah it's hard to pinpoint.

That would be FAT32. You might be getting confusered with NTFS. Most head units won't read NTFS.

Lol yep :P

I said sub bass, and bass guitar / kick drums have their fundamentals in a higher range.

Panel resonance from something near by the subwoofer can certainly throw cues as to where the sound is coming from.

I feel bass everywhere. If I play a 40hz sine wave, I can't locate the direction it's coming from, unless something is resonating or rattling near the subwoofer.

If I play Hotel California, then yes, everything appears to be up front and on the dash.

If I play Hotel California, and I was to move my subwoofer enclosure to the front, on the passenger seat, aside from losing output, I wouldn't notice any difference as to where the sub bass frequencies appear to be coming from.

My point is, sub bass alone can't be localized. Once you add the sound of a kick drum to the mix, then the sub bass can appear to be coming from the same place that the kick drum is coming from.

You mean like delaying the front stage? Woulddn't it still sound like it's coming from behind you?

You mean like delaying the front stage? Woulddn't it still sound like it's coming from behind you?

yep ... same concept ...

Only way to literally explain it and you get the correct idea would be to do it yourself in your vehicle ... or demo mine ... or anybody's SQ machine that done it ...

Think about your headphones...all frequencies hit your eardrum at the same time...you're trying to do the same thing in your car, but the path length from the drivers to your ears is different for each speaker. A processor delays the output of each speaker a couple of milliseconds so that they all reach your ear at the same time, making it hard to differentiate where the sound is coming from...

Please keep in mind that the most impressive Sound Quality systems have LITTLE to NO Time Alignment / Processing ...

Installation skills is the best method, period !!!

Just cause I said my truck will run time alignment doesn't mean I use it in competition or in demos ...

I literally hate bandaids on a system ... and as far as i'm concerned, Time alignment / processing / Notch EQing is a MAJOR bandaid for poor installation skills ...

Just wanted to make that clear ... Sorry for thread jacking about my "Rant" ...

Thanks ...

Randal

explain that to me. how do you get around the fact that the drivers side speakers are closer to you than the passenger side? how do you get a center without EQing or time alignment? or do you just have your own opinion on what SQ is and say that other forms are crap?

If I answered you in a well mannered, informative way, you asked a good question or had a good attitude. If I was an asshole, you asked a stupid question or you had a fucktard attitude... or I was in a bad mood.

put your car against Fred from Arc Audio. he's a local MECA judge too. I'm curious what he would have to say.

Sir, would you please go on my SMD build log and read the last page ... There is a couple of reviews by veteran SMD members ... They should be able to answer your questions ...

lol

I can vouch for Cableguy184's truck. All the music comes from FAR front left, FAR right and FAR center. All of it. And when I say FAR, I mean like several feet outside of the truck and way over the hood- possibly in front of the entire truck. Seriously some sort of VooDoo. You sit in there, see the speakers- and have a extremely hard time comprehending how the system does it.

All from L&R mid & tweet, 1 center, and substage in the back (and no time alignment or processing band aids either as he said). As far as what music from his truck sounds like- I heard no bass from the back. None. It came from up front and was perfectly matched in position, depth, timing, and volume. I didn't even THINK left or right or center.... I couldn't get over the fact that it just sounded RIGHT. You could totally disconnect your thought process and KNOW it sounded correct. That is what SQ is. ... another analogy: Imagine the best headphones you have ever heard- and then somehow implant them in your brain where you aren't hearing the sound from a point source, but the music just IS. That is what his truck sounds like. Like you are actually hearing music with your ears the way you think a song in your head. Crazy. It gets plenty loud, but is not fatiguing at all... and at no point did I ever have cause to look at the subs like "holy crap!" on them getting up or what have you- they were so well blended in, I didn't even think about them being there. BUT- they are there.

I guess what I am saying is- I suppose it doesn't matter how you get to your goals, as long as you get there. Cableguy184 knows his stuff on this. If he gives you well experienced advice, at least give it a try. :unknw: I am with my stuff!
