TheSamoan
sand to bare metal thats what the body guys do at my shop im sure you could get away with sanding the surface with like 80 grit or something like that first Edited March 20, 2012 by TheSamoan
CrownVic
It depends on the condition of the previous paint and primer, if the original primer is in good condition, then its not necessary to go down to bare metal
vibrator
it is better to go down to to bare metal, the primer sometimes doesn't bond to the paint and it just flakes off. better to do it properly the first time around. In his letter, he thanked Mr. Ford for making his Model A Ford such a good getaway car.

bhirst
It is nessasary to sand it down to bare metal. Perferably grind it down. It will not stick well to paint. If you want something that will use a polyester putty but even that needs sanded and it is not recommended to use thick layers. Dwn4BassAlan
yea you will definitely want to sand it all the way down, since you have to mold and shape it to the body it needs the strongest bond and if its just on top itll start chipping off THROUGH your paint. I have a picture from my car if you want to see an example. Nothing teaches you better than personal experience, especially if you do it right the first time. And if your bondo is going in to repair where rust is, you definitely need to, becuase you need to grind all the rust off first anyway, but get all around it so it doesnt spread. My response of well we don't really use your vagina so should we throw that out was evidently not the right response. I had to leave the room. I missed Alan. RIP 5/29/15 - I love you son. Airborne
like everyone said, sand to bare metal. How big of a repair are you talking about? Filler is meant for SMALL dent repair bro. And Evercoat is the SHIT! Bondo is a pain in the ass to sand and cracks etc...
