After throwing all my stuff in this weekend, I took the DD-1 to the SK1500 and found that:

1) My headunit doesn't clip

2) The amps gain is about 70% or more before I get a clip on a -10db track. Just feels sketchy to me. Anybody else have experience with the amps? It pounds and doesn't seem to break a sweat.. Like I said, it just feels sketchy.

Soundstream VIR-8300 Sub level is all the way up (15). and the preout voltage seems to be hard to narrow. I got a booklet that says 2v and a few sites that say 4.

well you are using a -10db tone. if you were to use a 0db tone, which i highly dont recommend you doing, then the gain will be much lower.

you're fine.

2v preouts would warrant a higher setting on your amp..

i have 4v preouts and my SW level is 5/15 my gain knob sits at around 60%?

actually let me run outside and check where the arrow is pointing..

its pointing at the L in bass controL.

but my knob goes past the "max" arrow, all the way up it points all the way down.

every setup is different.

using a -10db tone, the amp has to amplify it more to get X output, hence the higher gain.

unlike if it were to amplify the 0db tone, it wouldn't have to amplify it as much to get X output. which yields a lower gain position.

its simple, really.

he would have a WAAAAY less chance of clipping if he set it with the 0db. setting it with the -10db is actually a bit useless since most music is way higher. -5db would be the best most likely for daily, 0db if you want to be safe. the higher the db on the test track for the DD1, the lower the gain and quieter it will sound. but OP, set it to what you normally listen to as far as you usual song amplitude (i think that's the right word).

and with a 2v preout your gain will be quite high, if you have a 4v preout, the gain would be much lower.

that is true with 0, but then he'll have all that wasted power not being used because he wont be clipping ever unless the music itself is. -5 would be better, yeah, but a lot of unedited music doesnt even have bass lines recorded that high. using -10db, sure you might clip slightly every once in a while, but i'd rather clip a little than to have unused power. its not like your subs are going to blow up if you feed them a barely clipped signal. thats just my opinion.

was just letting him know my situation so hes not all freaking out.

but if the dd1 says no clip at 70%, then thats the word of god.

if it sounds nice to you, d/w.. but theres nothing wrong with anything in your setup. 70% is just your area with the -10 tone, max unclipped volume on the hu, max unclipped pre out voltage.
