Should I be able to hear my sub with hu vol at 1?

When listening to my music I can only hear my sub when I turn the volume to about 10 on my hu, should I be able to have my hu vol at 1 and still hear my sub? Or is it just a thing with the sub that it only turns on with enough volts from my pre amps? Just wondering.

The hu is a jvc kd-r820bt with 2.5v pre amps. Used a ddm to set gains on amp.

It's all about what you want, really. You can turn your sub level down(on head unit) so that you can barely hear it at full volume, or hear it loud as hell at ~10%. It's however you want your system to sound, just be careful of clipping/distorting your sub.

With that said, I've never owned a JCV h/u, but I've always kept my sub level at 0 and loudness off, so maybe you could start there.

When I set my subs gain I had the subwoofer setting at +08 which is max. Also have a rf punch control which is a gain knob (yes I have tested this) but even at my full gain I don't get any sub response until about 25% (10-40)of my max clean head unit volume

I had that problem, it was bc my RCA's weren't putting out much of a signal until it was around volume 30-40. I bought a line driver, problem solved 4V all day everyday

Well found out at my 75% max volume my rcas where only putting out .3 volts, so retuned my amps knowing that's how much voltage there getting and my sub is 20x louder and cleaner.

Instead of the 2.5v I thought I was sending to the amp

sub level had to be turned up all the way. your head unit probably doesn't clip til like 90% if it's that low but don't try it without proper equipment

you don't need a line driver.

head unit volume is probably exponential instead of linear. hence why there is no real power til like volume 30 or whatever
