Jeffl Posted April 15, 2012 Report Posted April 15, 2012 Im making my first sub box on my weekend (Monday/ Tuesday) and I have a few questions about making it. First is do I pre drill the screw holes before I glue the box together? Or do I glue it and then pre drill my screw holes? How do I attach box braces? Just wood glue? Plan on using just triangle wedges of left over mdf. Any tips on building would be much appicated.
carshateme Posted April 15, 2012 Report Posted April 15, 2012 *waits for stereo joe* Pre drill all holes...else you'll get the wood popping up and causing unnecessary sanding (It can also "Split the wood"). I predrill the holes then glue it, since I don't have the 50ft clamps, I use MDF or Course Drywall screws to hold the wood down while the glue dries. But if you have the clamps, you want to clamp it down until the glue dries then put a few screw in it for extra insurance. Attaching braces is best glued and screwed down. Notice the huge gap on top...don't do that mistake...make sure everything is cut straight and even. Sand everything down smooth. if you run into something like this and don't have any wood to cover your ass...I normally use caulk or silicon. New build coming soon. JustinWilson Posted April 15, 2012 Report Posted April 15, 2012 First of all draw out your plan for building the box, make sure all cuts are 100% straight and correct dimensions. If working with MDF as it seems to be the case have 2 drills ready, one to pre-drill holes and another for putting in screws. Also be aware that tons of screws isn't the goal, the true strength comes from the glue for the most part so make sure there are clean and even surfaces as well as appropriate heat and humidity. Glue, clamp, pre-drill, screw, leave clamped until properly set. Jeffl Posted April 15, 2012 Author Report Posted April 15, 2012 Ok thanks I have a few clamps and I have caulk and I bought 3 2x4' sheets and only making a 1.5 ported box so I have a extra piece for mistakes

Like if it's 2" to the left or right going to effect of sound of the box? The design I have sets the sub to the left of te box slightly due to the port being on the right side of box
