DubNDodge
I'm new to subwoofer box building, I've done some wood working before, but not with subwoofers, tuning, etc. Before I have always bought prefab boxes, but now I am ready to have some real results from a good box. I know the basics of what it takes to build a subwoofer box (I think). I'll need: 3/4" MDF Wood Glue Screws Caulking (for the inside edges) and ____? I have all the tools/saws needed to construct. I plan on putting two AQ SDC2.5 12" subs in a box. The max dimensions I can put the box into is H15"xW36"xD36" From what I have read, when planning on putting subwoofers firing towards the rear of the car trunk, I'll need a gap between the box and the trunk so the sound waves can travel to the front of the car. How big of a gap does that need to be? Should I take that from the height or the width, or a bit of both? Also when tuning the box, what is it supposed to be tuned to? The Fs or below it? The specifications of the subwoofer, for the most part, are gibberish to me. I'll paste them below so you do not need to go searching for them. Woofer Size: 12" Fs: 36 Hz Qts: 0.563 Qes: 0.612 Qms: 6.945 Vas: 24.160 Le mH: 7.35 Sensitivity 1W/1m: 84.67dB Magnet Weight: 140 oz Coil Diameter: 2.5" Useable Throw: 2.3" Continuous Power: 600 Music Peak Power: 1200 Mounting Depth: 6.5" Circle Cutout: 11.1875" Something I also have read was that bracing is better than doubling up the sides of the box when the box's volume is over 2 cu ft. So with the brace, should I use MDF or a hard wood like red oak. (I understand I would have to glue 3 layers of MDF to make a brace if it's supposed to be out of MDF) So if someone could give me a few tips or some more items I'll need to make a good box, would be greatly appriciated. DubNDodge
If any advice is given, can someone just tell me what to tune the box to? Joe X
You could try this: Enclosure Specifications: Fb = 34 Hz Vb = 4.8 ft^3 External Height = 15 in External Width = 36 in External Depth = 25.5 in Port Width = 5 1/2 in Cut Sheet List: * All Dimensions in Inches. * Wood Thickness is 3/4 for all Parts. External Enclosure Parts: 2 x Front & Back (3 parts) = 36 x 15 Left & Right Sides = 23 1/4 x 13 1/2 Top & Bottom = 36 x 23 1/4 L Port Internal Assembly Parts: Front to Back = 17 3/4 x 13 1/2 Here's how it assembles:
DubNDodge
Thanks! But is there going to be any problem with the sound waves going to the front of the car?
