More cone area = louder? + Port area?

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas. So i started thinking about my next build. When i was thinking about what size subwoofers to put in i realized i could fit 2 18's or 4 12's with ease. Now if i do the 4 12's, ill have more cone area so i figured that would be louder right?

Also, can someone give me a rundown of port area to box volume? Isnt it something like 12-15 inches squared for porting to every 1 cubic feet of box volume?

This has been answered numerous times, but since I read it, I will reply....

If you can give the 2 18s proper air space then under the same circumstances, just more cone area is louder.

12-16 sq inches per cube is great place to start.  Test and tune to find the best, requires many system builds to find the perfect number of port area.  Idea is you want the sub to hit full xmax based off the port tuning without unloading.  The sub hitting full xmax is where it is loudest.

What 12's and 18's are you referring to where the 4 12s at roughly 480-500 square cm vs an 18" with roughly 1200+ per woofer 2400+>1920-2000 sq cm. I'M not sure which brands of subs you are interested in, so there is a slight chance I'm not right on with the cone area, but MOST 2 18" combos will have more cone than most 4 12 setups.

Im not the one you want to try to troll. Just a fyi for you.

You have to look for the dB/watt ratio http://www.ascendantaudio.com/mayhem.php very good ratio in the caraudioscene, if not the best.

Yesterday i take a look at a Soundstream T 6 15 sub´s those sub´s have only a ratio of 86.7 or 87.4 did not remember exactly.

To compare 12´s with 18´s without names is apples with oranges.

that number is almost completely irrelevant, anyone who would purely buy a subwoofer off of that needs to really rethink what they are doing.

And that is 1 watt (2.83v) at 1 meter away, secondly i think it is also free air. When would you ever feed a sub 1 watt, free air, and listen to it ~3ft away while inside a vehicle? Yes it is sensitivity, but basing how well a sub will perform off of that is ludicrous. pro audio mids and tweets, yes, subwoofers, no.

2 18's really has more cone area?! Man thats a brain teaser then lol. Its the AudioQue HDC4's btw.

4 12s is roughly 380sq in

2 18s is roughly 440sq in

(these are by using pi*r^2 and with the cutout diameter)
