Modified shotgun ammo

I was browsing youtube today and found several videos with interesting modified shotgun ammunition. The 'cut shell' (cut a ring around the middle of the cartridge, allowing the front part of the cartridge to exit the gun with the shot, keeping shot patterns incredibly tight), 'wax slug' (cut the top edge of the cartridge off, heat the shot in a pan with wax and pour shot with melted wax back into the cartridge), and slugs made from lead fishing line weights. All shells appeared very effective and a lot cheaper than buying shotgun slugs, but obviously they sacrificed accuracy. In the next couple weeks I'm gonna try to make some of these and try them out. What do y'all think of this?

Finally got around to trying cut shells. A cheap 2 3/4 12 gauge shell (bird shot) punched a hole through a 4x6 wood post at 10 yards. Same thing at 25, and further as long as you can hit it. Accuracy starts suffering after 20 yards, but you'll hit a body-sized target every time up to about 50 yards consistently.

I wouldnt get in the habit of doin that.... Sounds like it could be a lethal accident waiting to happen...Not to mention if u ever had to use the ammo to save ur ass they would crucify you in court if they found out it was modified... So be mindful of that... I have lots of experience with the legal system....

Run of the mill production defense ammo is your best bet

Yes, I realize it probably puts excess strain on the barrel, so I only put 3 rounds through my shotgun (10, 25, and 50 yards). I used a Benelli Nova pump chambered for 3.5" magnum.

And yeah I realized that I'd get my ass chewed off in that situation. I just wanted to test the practicality of it. The original use of cut shells was for killing game for survival when said hunters could not afford to buy slugs for larger game. It was a fun experiment, but one I won't repeat with my shotgun.

I do want to try the wax slugs though. It sounds like a fun (and much more safe) thing to try.

yeah the legal thing of defense is something else , to me it sounds like you are better off (legally) if the person you shoot in self defense dies . if you shoot someone in that circumstance and they survive they could sue you , which is stupid but real .

another load not mentioned is rock salt , friend of mine keeps a few rock salt loads for stray dogs that may wander up to his farm place .the rock salt round don't injure really , just fuggin herts

Yup. Either you let them shoot you first and then you die, or you shoot first and get screwed legally.

i got some rock salt shells for home defense 2 of those and if those dont work #7 bird shot

ill stick to 00 buck and 1oz slugs...... Ive never been impressed with modified or gimmick rounds...
