I'm functional....FINALLY! :clapping:

Some Second Skin on the bottom of the trunk floor:

Anybody not like it when you connect your big power cables to your amp(s) and they spark as the internal power supply caps charge?

Add a power resistor inline with the positive cable and touch the amp terminal.

It will slowly charge up the power supply without a spark.

Then just remove the resistor and add the cable with no spark :good:

Worked great.

IMG_0684.jpg

...ITS ALIVE!!!

So I spent most of the afternoon just driving around and playing music and working on my tuning.

I didn't want to push anything too hard so I was cautious.

I tuned with my DD1 on the -5dB track but was still scared when my clipping light on the bass knob flashed.

That and the fact that I'm pushing a lot to my VVX12's.

So I'm just getting my feet wet and getting used to the equipment.

I'll work on getting some videos together but sure enough my little digital camera took a shit and is not working.

Since all my music content and Pandora is on my iPhone, I can't use that as a music source AND take videos with it, not that it'd be all that great anyway, so I'm working on a solution for that...

First impressions:

I've been out of the game for a few years but all in all it sounds pretty good :drink40:

Even though I don't have the trunk sealed off yet, there isn't as much rattle as I thought there'd be.

Given my VVX's are new and not broken in quite yet, they seemed to work pretty good.

Initial clamp numbers from playing some DJ Magic Mike "Bassin' After Midnight" since that song seemed to knock the crap out of my rear-view mirror the most:

58.3V

24.4A

So I'm around 1,422VA.

The DC2K is wired to 1ohm so I was hoping for that full 2K but I'm still tuning and playing with the settings so we'll see what we can get in the future.

Fold down seats....nice

How did head unit installation go? specifically putting wire harness behind HU?

Yep, fold-down is nice. Lots more install options. I noticed you have the metal plate. You probably don't want to take it to the extreme and cut it, huh?

HU install? It was a PITA :diablo:

I didn't do any wire harness. I ran custom power and ground lines to the fuse block in the glovebox.

Then all the other custom RCA, antenna and other wires.

The nightmare was cutting the ductwork behind the dash to stuff in a double DIN.

Lots of intricate little steps...

Maybe. Right now I'm trying to get as much as possible out of the trunk. But I might.

I had trouble fitting all of the wire harness behind HU. I also cut some of the plastic out of there.

Will also be putting double din in once I fix my electrical problem.

Yeah its definitely a tight fit behind the dash. I was concerned that the RCA's wouldn't have enough room between the back of the HU and the ductwork in the dash.

Mine fits in there but its a real tight squeeze.

A word of notice on the double DIN install, if you do notch the ductwork in the dash, keep in mind that the area back there gets REAL hot unless you turn on the A/C.

The metal notch-plate that comes with the install kit absorbs a good amount of heat from that ductwork. I added some Secondskin to the plate thinking it may help as insulation but I think its working just the opposite and giving off some heat, not good for the HU.

Best of luck with it, I'm anxious to see another E46 double DIN install!

Oh yeah, as good as I can without too much permanent damage to the car.

Foam padding, tape and some tight trim panels along the back of the sub-box should do the trick.

Then some more trim panels for the front of the box so that it looks clean when the rear seat is lowered.

  • 1 month later...

Back at it!

:detail:

Sorry for the delay, had a bunch of distractions through the middle of summer (weddings, vacations, trips, etc...).

One of which was having to pull my Mechman out and send it in to have it looked at.

I was getting some nasty 16V spikes when my alternator would spin up from idle.

It took all of August but I finally got it back.

185mechman2.jpg

I was using the AVBM which may have been the cause of the issue.

To make it more reliable, I had them upgrade the alt to an adjustable external regulator instead.

183mechmanextreg.jpg

Here's a flashback to a month ago on how the system was:

180tempsetup.jpg

180tempsetup2.jpg

I originally wanted to wrap vinyl around the front baffle piece that surrounds the subs.

Soo I tried out my vinyl wrapping skillz on some sample holes that I did...

181-vinylwrap.jpg

Well, that didn't work out. Not sure how you guys wrap around a circle and not end up with a bunch of material piled up at the end..?

Since I was anticipating some major issues getting the vinyl to wrap correctly with the edges around the front of my box, I scraped that idea.

Instead, I'm going to paint the front white and place a trim piece over the front. I figure the white "rings" will look better anyway and detail the subs better since they have white logos.

181-whitebaffle.jpg

This was my other idea...

182pearlpaint.jpg

Spray some pearl white around the inside and front of the box to add some shimmer. Although it ended up just looking grey and spotty so I primered over it.

I'll see if I can't come up with a better idea.
