Yea he could be clipping them. I would put money on it that amp does not make 1700wrms.... It has less fusing than a BRZ1200. 120 amps of fusing 14.4 volts 100% efficiency = 1728 but thats not feasible. But even so...1000w the pair clipped could burn up the subs...so you are right.
