Hi, I'm working on an article about the history of bass cars, and I'm hoping to get in touch with people who have stashes of magazines or other materials on bass-related topics, hopefully going back as far as possible (I'm guessing these started showing up on newsstands in the late 1980s?). I was lucky enough to meet Steve Meade a few years ago at a dbDrag show in Southern California, and I thought his forum might be a good place to come for help.

Just so you know a little about me and my project: I'm a researcher in the Communication department at the University of South Florida in Tampa, where I write mostly about hip hop culture and race. Yeah, believe it or not, they pay me to do this. My current project is a history of car audio, going back all the way to the 1920s. As far as I've been able to tell, noone has ever written this history. The archives of the early years are pretty widely available (and amazing, if you're interested in history) but obviously libraries aren't really stocking up on copies of car stereo magazines from the 1990s, so I need a little help there.

At this stage, I don't have a significant amount of money for this research, so if you're in Florida that would be ideal. But if you happen to have the world's greatest private library of boom car-related material, I'll probably find a way to get to you wherever you are.

And just so you know, my own car is stock, but that's mostly because I've been a totally broke student for most of the last decade. I love what you guys do, and the article I'm working on is very sympathetic to bass car culture. I want to do the best possible job of telling its story.

Here is a few pro installs that I used for ref. when I started building my car. Most are horn installs. They were very popular back in the mid 90's. Should be some great info there.
