I just put 2 3512 Digital Design subs in my car. I used a 3000 watt audiopipe amp, added another battery, and used 0 gauge wiring. So a couple questions. The guy that installed my system said that I need to upgrade my alternator because Im not getting enough power to get the full potential of my amp. Is this true or is he hustling me? So with the bass turned all the way down on my head unit, my subwoofer level is at 10 ( 15 is the max), and the gain is turned way down, I smell the voice coils heating up when I hit very low lows. I am pushing less power than they can hold so I don't know why they are over heating. I have burnt the voice coils on 3 sets of 15's. Why does this keep happening?

Make sure bass boosting is all off. Only thing you will be working with is subwoofer level, volume levels, and only time yo should touch your gains is when setting them. If you are smelling your voice coil on low notes and believe your are not clipping, you might be playing below your tuning.

I'll admit, half way through sanding that fiberglass in the rain and cold while I was all itchy I was definitely starting to question why i was doing this haha

installed by a shop? i bet your clipping unless they tuned your amp and headunit with a o-scope or dd-1.

or like /\ said playing below box tuning....that causes all kinds of bad shit to happen lol

edit: try putting your headunit eq totally flat- treble, bass, mid, sub @ 0 and see if it happens..... even though your gain is way down on your amp-when you use the eq for turning a certain freq. range up it can make it clip sooner @ the headunit causing clipping @ the amp.....( not sure if i worded that right)

i think there real i was looking through that guys stuff he sells and it looks like he finds stuff at auctions and just sells it

Yea, it looks like someone got the mids about a month ago....shit. If I had a whole Hertz front stage my ears would jizz all over my cheeks.

I wouldnt doubt they set your gains to high especially if your buying your gear from them everytime you blow it

I've had a shop install my system before. The gain on my amp was at its max.... What a bunch of morons.
