I'm getting a Soundstream RUB1.1600D (1600 RMS @ 1 ohm), Pops 12" sub (1100 RMS) in a custom ported box, and I need to know what I should upgrade in the electrical department. I already had 4 gauge wire going to my Kenwood 8105D should I use 1/0 instead? Should I do the big 3 upgrade? Should I get a new battery as well? Just at a loss for what I should do so performance is at it's peak. Thanks for the help.

AMI CUSTOMS Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 4 gauge is fine depending on the length, a group 31 battery is never a bad idea cuz you know you will upgrade later, a group 31 will run 2k+ with little drop on a stock alt with BIG3 in 1/0 wire. rockFord_Expedition Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Nothing at all, stock electrical is the way to go! Specifics.... what sub are you running, what are the box specs, etc.? With the information provided, the best answer I can give to your question is yes you should run 1/0 instead of 4ga. 4ga is only good, at best, for up to 150 amps of current. Your amp will draw roughly 160 at power. Is this the only amp/aftermarket electrical in your vehicle? You stated that your amp puts out 1600 RMS @ 1 ohm, is this how it will be wired in your vehicle? According to the soundstream website, your amp has 4 ga inputs, so that 4 ga run should be as short as you can get it since the amp can draw more current than the wire it is designed for can handle. I gurantee your amp is getting <14v, and yes you should definately do the big three. Upgrading your electrical is a must. If I understand you right, you are attempting to overpower your sub by about 45% over it's tolerances, which can be done but a clean signal amongst other things is mandatory to do so. The box is an entirely different topic, so I won't touch that here. You mention you want performance to be at it's peak, and I am not sure what your budget is but if you are running a stock alternator, you should upgrade that to at least a quality 200 amp alternator. That, and the big 3 done RIGHT, along with replacing as much of your 4ga wire w/ 1/0 as possible, will keep your amp closer to the 14.4v it wants and ensure that the power is clean. Of course an extra battery(s) would be a good idea, when is it not? I did say that my suggestion is the bare minimum I would do, I didn't say he shouldn't install another battery. Never said my suggestion was the end all be all. I have no idea what his budget is, amongst other variables. Besides, you had already reccomended a group 31 battery to him? A High Output alternator will be wonderful for your system, but you can easily go without. Only using the stock one. 0 ga from the stock batt to the rear one, and then you can run 4 ga wire to the amp, or even 0 ga wire and you just take off some strands to put the big wire into the amplifier. black BMW X1 2.0 l 192 hp OEM head unit, Amplifiers : Audison AP 8.9 with integrated DSP and Ampere Audio 1200. Good advice... Op, another wiring option would be to use a gauge adapter for your power and ground wire. They make them that accept 1/0 wire and plug in to a 4 ga terminal. I don't have any experience with them, but have seen them on sonicelectronix.com If anyone has experience with these maybe they can chime in.
